COD Black Ops looks pretty good on PC

Thats what i thought. It seems that no review site can be trusted as they are reliant on the good will of the publishers and guess what they want their pound of flesh back!

Granted it`s far from perfect, but I`m enjoying bot the SP and MP so far
 
Right, I've gotten around to checking this out after being a COD fan for some time now, and Treyarch have truly forgotten how to make a PC game.

Let me explain:

THEY HARDCODED THE CONFIG FILES TO USE 1GB RAM!

 Did that grab you enough? :p

Now, to fix it.

Go to your install directory, and open config.cfg and config_mp.cfg in a text editor, such as Notepad.

Change the following values:

seta sys_sysMB "1024" -> To where 1024 is the number of MB RAM you have (likely to be 4096)

While you're on, change:

seta r_multithreaded_device "0" -> Change the 0 to a 1 unless you have a single core CPU (highly unlikely)

Also, change the value:

seta r_multiGpu "1" -> Change the 1 to a 0 unless you're running SLi or Crossfire.

With that, the game becomes playable.



Did Treyarch even bother to check the default config files before they released this? :confused:

I would put my opinions on this matter into words, except the only character used would be *. Muppets.

Sorry, meant to mention there's 2 config files.

Config.cfg is for the Single Player campaign.

Config_mp.cfg is for multiplayer. I reckon the setting needs changing in both.

Did it help in MP? Certainly did in my SP, although my PC is currently crippled by having only 2Gb RAM, I have an ever increasingly expensive fault that I havent successfully diagnosed yet. :(
 
scary its in steam aps / your steam folder name/ call of duty black ops / players . look for mp_cfg.

matt my mate went from a e8200 at 3.2 yesterday to a amd 640 3 ghz quad. best thing is most on here would say dont its not much difference on black ops its night and day . he doesnt even skip a frame now. i think the game wants a quad at least for constant smoothness and nothing less.

I havent had any crashes as of yet but the game is far from smoothy and often jerky and sometime I get freezes for a sec. I have tried changing the memory to 4096 as posteed above but as of yet not managed to play on a full server on one of the big maps. Will post here if I see a noticble difference.

I have had to put the graphcis to minimal and reduce my my favoured resolution from 1900x1200 to 1600x1200 just to improve things.
 
Don't know if this has been posted already in the thread but I'll mention it anyway just incase. With regards to the server browser mostly ignoring attempts to join matches (at first anyway) highlighting any other random server on the list then double clicking on the one you actually want to join is working nigh on every time for me.

As for the config edit, I'm tempted because even after the patch, fps sits around 90 with occasional drops to 80ish. Seems well below what I'd expect so I am curious to know exactly why, but it looks like I'm having way less network problems than most people and it's more than playable so I think I'll leave it for now. An official fix would be nice though :).

Well in that case it'll be getting abandoned/not played until I get a Quad in the long distant future.

If I can be fussed, I'll download it onto my laptop.

And unleash the i7 Quad 2.93Ghz on it :D :p 4Gb RAM to boot, and a Nvidia Geforce Go 330. It plays Crysis on medium, it should play this POS no bother.
 
Well i dont really like the game so far but haven't had any issues with stutter or lag playing SP with all settings on max
 
You can't change sys_sysMB - even if you set it in config and make config readonly it will default to 1024Mb in game.

Can people with the severe performance issues/choppyness say what kinda CPU they have as some are wondering if its a common issue with 45nm wolfdale/yorkfield i.e. intel E8x00 and Q9xxx series tho I seem to remember people with AMD and i7 CPUs also complaining.

plenty more decent servers out there where you will find a good game, can personally recommend the FAP and LTUK servers

sorry to hear of your troubles on there. We have had a few people mention it but the majority seems to be ok. Try your luck on the FAP or LTUK servers and see how you get on. The servers are all provided by the same company so no idea why it would just be our server that you are experiencing the issues with.

We try not to kick players who wear the OCUK tag unless the server is full of TFU and OCUK so need a space for another TFU member

we pay for the server to provide our members somewhere to play, why wouldn't we make a space for them to play? unfortunate if it happens to be you we kick, however we try not to kick OCUK people if it can be helped. Not everyone who plays on our servers from OCUK actually put OCUK in the clan tags, which means occasionally we kick people that wouldn't normally have been kicked if they had the tags on.

Thanks for your opinion, personally I have never banned someone just because they have killed me but each to their own. :)

As far as I am aware only 2 people have been banned from our server and I banned them both. I know for definite that you were not one of the ones I banned.

However it is possible that one of the other admins has banned you while I haven't been on. Unfortunately the poor admin tools given to us for this game does not seem to have any kind of logs that I can look at to find out for you.

Its TFU policy that we will kick random players from the server to make room for members. We try not to kick people who sport the OCUK tag. if you were wearing the [HAX] tag then its possible you were kicked to make room for a member. Why you would be banned after this I don't know.

Get in touch with thegoon84 either here or on our forums and he may be able to help you further

Even though I had fixed my mp file, I still experienced stuttering.

NOT ANYMORE! :D

these configs run the game as smooth as s*** of a chrome shovel.
