*****Ultimate Football Manager 11*****

Never underestimate the importance of Alex Song... Since he got injured I've let an 8pt lead in the PL slip and I'm now 3pts behind and Man Utd have a game in hand too. Excellent player is the simple point I'm trying to make here.

It is possible to spend a mental amount of cash using 48month deals.

Will screw you in the future though

Only if you do it every year without provisioning for it. The problem is of course that that is exactly what most people will do. I've still got 12m of my transfer budget left and the club has about 160m in the bank. I'll not likely be buying anyone next summer unless they are actually transfer listed. I'll be trying to sell Anderson, Gibson, and a few others to bring a little more cashing.

Right it depends on one thing really, how many league do you have active?? (well and the data base size) as I found it helped having most of South America going to get some decent players in that just want to play in England for not a lot...

My other tip is to plan who your 4 season long loans are, in England you can have 4 season long loans, make them all decent kids who you dont have to pay wages for. I got Kieran Agard from Everton, John Dunleavy from Wolves, Ashley Hemmings and Marco Ranieri from Spurs. Some of these players are good ideas as there contracts are up at the end of the first season making them good free buys if they like you...

Another good shout is Alex Chamberlain out of Southampton (been watching him play in real life and hes starting to get good) but in FM he tends to get sold to a prem team and stuck out on loan. I wish I had him on the season long option but I forgot and only got him in for 3 months, he got a few goals and some assists for just being short and fast!

Loan signings are a killer for the first season or two really, there's little point in buying up a l2 squad when you get lumped with a MASSIVE squad to start with and little hope of offloading half the players till their contracts run out (and the left and right backs your start with are terrible).

For interesting frees (if they are in your database) you might get lucky and get King Gyan (midfield whos generally rated at champ level so offer him a contract as soon as you see him as he just wants to play). Michael Abnett is a good enough prospect for right back, Killian Brennan got released from an Irish team whos l1 left mid and I got Mihael Kovacevic out of Dundee United's reserves but im not 100% sure about him...

Thanks for the reply. I currently am using small database and just the English leagues as my PC is pretty old now and wouldn't handle more leagues. I could handle it but the game would be slow and take a long time to play each day. I guess that's something I could put up with if it allows me more scope for better and younger players.

I will start a new game up with large database and some South American leagues plus some other Euro ones and see how my PC goes along with it.

Ah no worries, id do a few experiments to see what sort of acceptable performance you can get out of your pc (iv accepted that playing it at half the half a star level is the best way to make the lower leagues playable)

Definitely recommend having the Scotland and Ireland (republic) leagues on for a wealth of l1 and l2 players that tend to want to leave on frees to England

Decided to buy this and start at the bottom. None of this namby-pamby starting out in the Premier League for me. ;)

I'm now the new manager of Weston-super-Mare, with a whopping £0 available for transfers.

The media have clearly cottoned on to the buzz going around the place and have seen the massive potential in the club and their new manager; this is borne out by their prediction that we'll finish flat last in the Blue Square South.

I'll show them. Premier League in 5 seasons, Champions League in 6. Mark my words.

May have gone a bit overboard on the free transfers:

I did release/sell a few, and aim to sell a few more come January (even some of the ones I just signed for profit). Owen is a great signing so far, and the extra squad numbers is helping due to the fact that I qualified for the EC after winning the FA Cup. I think I have 24 players registered and 15 are HG, not too bad!

How much does talking to the media have an affect on your team? I usually send my assistant but decided before the League Cup final to big us up and say we were really confident even so we were playing Arsenal who are like 20 points clear in the league. I also set my team talk to no pressure and we won 3-0 which shocked me as we've struggled against good sides.

Next game, Birmingham, they had 2 players send off before the 20minute mark and we drew 1-1. I sent the assistant to the media and also for him to do team talks.

What do you think?

It makes a huge difference! Well if your players need that sort of encouragement (sort of based on their personalities) but being a Ferguson type manager and only talking to some really does hamper team moral after a good or bad performance (not dont hammer your team after a bad performance though).

What im trying to get at is you need some way for talking to your players (there are 3 bars of it on your manager profile) either directly, through the press conference or through the media. If your not consistent or not talking to anyone I found the players tend to have all sorts of problems...

Some times I criticise them, in private though never in the media (it seems a bit harsh). Not sure quite what to do in the big leagues, im still Burton in L2 and my left backs are non-league standards (the players im having most problems with) so its not the best example of what to do.

Either way the personal chat thing is a good way to deal with players generally, though my star striker is completely stuck on very poor moral...

So do you constructively criticise the players or basically just lift their confidence all the time?

Depends on the player.

Some love to be constantly told they're the best thing since sliced bread, others will get annoyed at you constantly praising them when they don't feel they deserve it.

Conversely, some take criticism well and vow to up their game, others will go into a sulk. One thing is for sure, even the most loyal, professional player will get tired of constant criticism.

You just have to find out which players this applies to by trial and error.

Sorry I didn't mean in individual talks, I mean when speaking to the media, do you always try and be confident saying we'll win etc or play down the players?
