***The Official Gran Turismo 5 Thread***

Considering that the latest Fanatec wheels haven't been released yet I don't think you're going to get a balanced opinion.

Fan boys are gonna fan, the haters are gonna hate.

I decided on a G27 because: It exists, is available to buy and will be here tomorrow (a week before the game arrives not a month after)
It has strong force feedback, quiet helical gears and has had top marks in all the reviews by people who've used all of the wheels
available on the market and as such are in a better position than most to compare the wheels and give a semi trustworthy opinion based
on experience. I've never read a review on the G27 which has said the 'it's rubbish buy that one instead' or 'this is wrong with it'

I've never used a wheel in a racing game so I doubt I'm going to miss anything which isn't on the G27

It may be argued that there are better wheels on the market but while that's being argued on the web I'll be playing GT5 :D

The only reason im looking at alternatives is because i don't have a great deal of space where my console/TV is setup. This means that I don't really have anything to clamp the wheel and shifter too.

My cousin has a G25 and it is an awesome bit of kit but im restricted by space.

On a differen't note, the clutch function was not available on GT: Prologue. Will this be enabled on the GT5?

Those Fanatecs do look nice, then I noticed the prices. Their cheapest wheel for example - £35 cheaper if you live in the US rather than the UK.

The 911 Clubsport wheel is even worse. £272 in the UK, £220 for the US, and US customers get the extra shifter set thrown in as well. Way to take the p**s out of your EU customers.

Would have expected this if they were actually based in the US, but not when they're in the EU.

It's just how it is for wheels I'm afraid..

A G27 is $260 in the US at most places (£160), we pay £225-£250

Obviously there are two things at play, firstly VAT for the EU, so add on 17.5%, and secondly, this market is competitive in the US, wheels are just cheaper over there as the G27 also shows.

The clutch was enabled for some wheels in GT5p, so I'm sure all will be for GT5.

And you can get wheelstands that are arguably even better then that thrustmaster and can be used for any wheel..

The wheelstand pro is common, http://www.wheelstandpro.com/ and even fanatec do a Rennsport Wheel Stand, http://www.fanatec.de/webshop/new_e...id=94&osCsid=7fa1315a4aa0787067c285a6f138c5f9

This is what most people use in a confined space, and no doubt why Thrustmaster integrated something along these lines in their product.

No Idea mate, I hope so. I'm limited for space, too. There's no way I can get a usable set up in between
the sofa and TV so I'm resigned to lifting the PS3 out from under teh TV and propping up by my PC display.

Both displays are 1080p one 37" and the other 26" so I'm not missing much screen space and I'm gaining
the advantage of screwing the wheel to a solid desk and sitting on a classy 'Steelcase 2' office chair :)

what are peoples view on the Logitech Driving Force GT??

Not a bad wheel, very good value for money, and it's the 'first' rung on the ladder I'd consider myself (I've used one).

It's only downsides are really that it doesn't have a clutch pedal and although it's good quality, it's obviously a bit more plastiky and doesn't have the same FFB and feel of the more expensive wheels.

for well under £100 it's the wheel to get in that price range!

The wheel stand pro is not as expensive as i thought. May see if I can get hold of a G25 and one of these.

Cheers for the input you lot.

million dolar question: how much of a difference in time etc will that make in game?

How long is a piece of string ? (correct answer - twice as long as it is from the middle to one end)

I think having the clutch pedal is more to do with an attempt at realism.

If a fantasy driver isn't considering buying a set up with a clutch then not having a clutch isn't going to affect the fantasy times :)

I like to think I can get on with a clutch but I might be rubbish at it and never use it !

It depends, in FM3, the clutch allowed quicker gear changes, and that could add up to a lot of lap time, but they did allow a button to be used as a clutch although some people couldn't get on with it, so a pedal would be handy.

I don't know what PD will do with it, I imagine it'll help out in some way, or it's just to add that more immersive driving experience, I don't know..

At the end of the day, if you have the clutch, it's always an option..

I wish this thread didn't exist, along with GT5 :(

I want the game, but know I need a wheel to get the best experience yet can't afford either this close to Christmas :(

I'm not using a wheel, I didn't for Forza and managed just fine.

As long as there is no advantage to manual clutch then I don't deem it to be a problem.

Given the choice, I would have a wheel but I just don't have the space, I'm just saying don't discount it just because you don't have a wheel.

I had a wheel, and it felt so good to play with in FM3, but I sold it because I couldn't justify the space it took up.

I'm happy enough with the pad. I've put in the odd top 5% time on the leaderboards which is good enough for me.

I have the Fanatec GT3 RS2 with Club Sport pedals, while it takes a while to get used to them if tweak it to your taste and it's the best wheel I've ever owned. I've had most of them. 430 / MS / GT and G25. I didn't upgrade to the G27 as I fancied a change.

WTF is this?!

Awful modelling and texturing tbh.
