Can anything be done about speed bumps?

Just because you don't mind them doesn't mean the rest of us don't mind them. And has been said already they do fix them when you show them they are illegal. Rainmaker go measure it and if its over 100mm or above the steep angle recommended enjoy writing back to the snooty git that it is illegal and you want it sorted.

Sit back smugly and wait several months and it will be done.

Apologies for trying to bring some sort of humour to this goddamn boring subject. I am not saying I dont mind them. In fact they annoy the hell out of me as my car scrapes because it is lowered.

I am however trying to point out that there are more important things to worry about. Its not as if they are in the middle of the m25 they are almost always on a quiet residential street or a rat run which should be a quiet residential street.

As I said before this is going round in circles. If people didnt drive like pillocks past schools, through a quiet residential area etc they would not be necessary however as it is in all walks of life we have to accomodate for the retards of society end of.

If you have a problem follow my simple guide here http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=17820115&postcount=59 and you will get he required response. Even if it is slightly sarcastic it is indeed the correct process to be following.

Yes, they are on little estates like mine. Which means my cars go over them many times a day.
So I couldn't give a damn that they aren't on the m25, they are where I feel they are not needed.

Oh and rat runs are rat runs because the main roads do not do their jobs properly. Don't go putting speed humps on the rat run, fix the main roads to be better!

Had lots of exhaust bracket problems with my polo due to speed bumps i used to go over on my way to work. And its not like i was doing stupid speeds either. Once i got my HR-V i never had a problem due to the increased clearance. On a side note, before i moved here i got a big leaflet from the council showing how they were going all Nazi with traffic calming measures in my area. I had the choice of voting yes or no. Guess what i voted.

I would love to have to oppertunity of working on a new road or a major widening project but in this country is it nigh on impossible, now even more so due to the latest cuts. The historical nature of the majority of the roads in the country means that they are almost always hemmed in by either buildings or farmland of which the owners are always reclutant to sell for obvious reasons preventing you from widening existing roads to take the additional capacity There is of course the compulsory purchase order route but that is a last resort.

Then of course if you try and build a new road/bypass you have the anti road campaigners such as Campaign for Better Transport rallying up local residents, environmentalists, soap dodgers and the NIMBY brigade to slow proceedings even further.

The only currently viable option to "fix" the existing road network, which most local authorities are now hot on, is to encourage the use of public transport which never works as its too expensive and if your going to pay a premium why sit on a bus next to a stinky old tramp when you can drive alone in your own car clogging the road network. The only way to get this approach to work is to force people to use it by making the roads more congested by putting in priority bus lanes making them a more desireable option (as can be seen implemented in plymouth recently I believe). This however tends to just **** people off!

Why not just give up maintaning the roads completely, the pot holes will eventually prevent anyone from doing more than 20mph and we can save the Irish economy at the same time by making all the road engineers redundant

Engineering a solution because of the few idiots is idiotic in itself

If a new speed hump outside a school prevents a child from getting hit by a boy racer and killed does that still make it an idiotic soloution? What is the value of a life and How many exhaust brackets can you buy for that cost?

If you made all the highways engineers redundant that would just give you more to moan about as the roads would be badly maintained! :p

For a group of motoring enthusiasts you dont seem to be very "pro" the people who are keeping the roads open for you to drive on. Granted some of the decisions made by local authorities are pretty poor and may inconvenience people or appear to be a waste of money etc but If you look at the big picture the roads in Britain aren't that bad in the great scheme of things. At least they all have a bound surface!

I

I agree, it is worthwhile having traffic calming measures outside of a school. However, they should only be in place when needed, not for the rest of the day.

Going back to the rat run, in most instances around my way, the rat runs don't need speed humps because they are no faster anyway. The congestion from the main roads has meant so many people trying the rat run that it is no longer worthwhile.
And yes, bloody bus lanes etc! Also stupid traffic lights not in sync etc.

I don't mind slowing down for speed humps. In fact, maybe putting one outside my house would stop people from driving past at 50 - 60mph and clipping wing mirrors.

What does annoy me is people behind me who cannot comprehend that in my old, low, stiff car, I will be slowing down quite a lot to negotiate these obstacles in a manner that won't destroy my vehicle.
I actually got overtaken ON a speedbump the other week by a guy in a Freelander. So much for traffic calming!

Got to agree with Lopez... there was a speedbump at the UEA that until it was recently remade into a much larger one, was nigh on impossible to get over in the mini without scraping. If I didn't slow down to about 2mph and go over at about a 45degree angle I would scrape the exhaust heavily every time. People didn't understand this until they occasionally heard the massive scrape-clonk.

Grr speedbumps!

Meaning there'd be absolutely no change whatsoever. Or maybe we'd even see an improvement, as people wouldn't have to perform ridiculous wide manoeuvres round ridiculously thought out speed bumps.
The number of these bumps that are followed by large pot holes as well... It'd be funny, if it wasn't for the fact that this isn't the third world. I've seen smoother farm tracks.

All that modern speed bumps do is damage your car and cause most drivers behind to try and pass or get frustrated.

I guess poorly designed/maintained roads are seen as bonus traffic calming measures, good times.

Really? It's these kind of posts that annoy me. You'd see no change whatsoever? So you'd be quite happy plodding along at 10mph on a nice long journey because you have to avoid potholes. Get a grip speed bumps are there for a reason and they perform a job. I don't like the thing but I can appreciate what they do.

I don't drive 10mph on roads to avoid potholes... I just avoid them at the speed I happen to be driving at. (If safe of course)
Our roads are terrible, there are potholes everywhere already. After this winter, I fully expect most of Aberdeen's roads to be some of the worst in the UK.

On the speed bump thing also... I'm not sure what purpose they serve when so many people speed in between them.
Still they have the "SAVES KIDS LIVES!!!! *mouth foam*" brigade on their side so you're an evil child killer if you don't have a positive opinion on them.

Get a low slung car and get stuck on it, leave the car there until the council are forced to rescue you and unblock the road. Repeat this the next day, etc...

Maybe just maybe you people with "lowered" cars need to not lower your car to the point a matchbox cannot fit underneath?

I have a normal bog standard car, yes I had to replace the front springs after 10 years but other then that speed bumps are not that bad.

I would agree I have seen some horrible ones but we are talking 1 that might be before you drive into some car park...big deal.

what is it with all this lowering of cars, so you get slightly better handling but you shouldn't be doing that kind of speed you need a lowered car
