Royal Mail MDEC, lots of people fired!

I've recently started to work on a temp basis for Royal Mail MDEC in Stoke.

Today was the last day of our training and we had to take various assessments, people who averaged less than 80% were fired. At a guess I'd say about 60 people were fired, out of 100.

I didn't even think this was allowed, as everyone had to take an assessment prior to being told that they had the job.

I wasn't one of the people that failed the overall assessment, but I met some great people that were, kinda gutting thinking I would have been working with them only to find out that they were to be fired.

Has anyone else seen this happen at an MDEC before?

Surly you mean let go in the trial period as they failed the training.
But no havent seen that but havent worked there since 02 or was it 03 in plymouth.

whether they can fire you or not depends entirely on your contact

being tempoary workers, you dont have the same rights as full time workers.

I expect there will be a clause in the contract that says they can end it at that point with no notice if you dont meet the required standards.

Maybe, but non of us were told this in the initial assessment or before going to the job.

I think it's rather silly that a test determines wether you're going to keep your job or not.

One of the worse companies I've worked for so far, I'm glad I'm only doing it for 5 weeks!

if its your "training" do you even have a job to keep yet ?

So you think you shoukd keep your job if you faik initial training :confused; if you fail that means you can't do the job being asked of you.

Well I don't think the people that missed out by a couple of percent should have been let go. People that missed out by loads then fair enough they should be let go.

but if you change the lines so that the score is lowered, what about those that miss the new pass line by a couple of percent ?

Its got to be drawn somewhere.

Well I suppose so, but a company as large as royal mail I'd have thought they would have been able to offer additional support if needed.

One thing that annoys me though is before these assessments I asked one of the manager if people were going to be sacked if they failed and he said no. Totally annoying. The reason he said that was because he knew people would have quit!!

You don't have much rights in the first 12 months anyway, permanent or temporary.

The fact that if it is a training period then you might have even less rights.

I completely agree. Like the driving test. Surely we should be tested on our ability to drive WHEN drunk which is a better indicator of how much more awesome we'd be driving sober.

Not really, considering to get the job you have to take an assessment.

Non of us were told that there was going to be another 3 assessments!!!

It's training, your position is totally silly, if you can't do the job you get let go. perfectly resonable and legal even for full tine contracts.

Unless it's changed that initiall assessment before you started was a typing speed test nothing more.
