currently have core 2 duo e8400 @ 3.6

have been toying with the idea upgrade cpu to quad, maybe something like q9650 or there of.

is it worth spending the money for new quad or buy whole new setup and sell/use the old for something.

mainly gaming & internet with occasional encoding of film and photoshop

thanks Ali

This is the same thing I'm thinking of

Upgrading from C2D to C2Q all depends on what you want to use the computer for... Ask yourself if it's something that will benefit from quad cores, if not then don't - wait until you can afford to buy a whole new rig

As you can see from my sig, I've got my E8400 up to over 4GHz on air cooling so it's perfectly capable of running at a good speed :)

If you're gaming then i'd say stick with the 8400, get a good cooler and OC it to atleast 4Ghz, those things can get to 4.6Ghz with a good cooler.

maybe im doing something wrong but i cant get it above 3.6 with it failing/bsod.
i know memory isnt as high in spec as i could go.

actually i remember last time i tried to clock it i was using creative sound card which kept crashing pc, now ive taken it out ive not had any problems. so im gonna try again see if i can at least hit 4ghz

also updated sig! as im now using corsair h50 with 2 apache fans which should keep it cool enough.

as i type im doing 4ghz running test (so far14 mins!!) and cpu is sitting at 46c
will leave it as long as pos probably like i did last time and fall asleep wake up 10 hours later !!! stable as a rock at 3.6ghz

in most games i'd think your 5850 would become a bottleneck before your e8400 @ 3.6 would at the moment, but for encoding and photoshop even something like a q6600 running at around 3.2 or higher would make a big difference.

That's what I did, bought my Q9650 back in June for £145, prices are still around £150 and unlikely to drop much in the next 6-18 months IMO. Basically means if I resell it 2 years from when I bought it the depreciation will be hardly anything. :D

Hello adbp1 :)

Are you using the memory from your sig?

~ corsair msx2 6400 ~

If so that is officially rated to run at 400MHz (DDR2-800) . . . if your running your Intel® Core™2 Duo E8400 @ 4GHz that means you must be overclocking the memory to 445MHz (DDR2-890) :D

Post up a CPU-z screenie if you can showing the [CPU], [Memory] & [SPD] tabs please! ;)
