Asking for a copy of license when insuring a car?

I used to have to in my first few years of driving, around 1997. Not been asked for some time.

As always I look upon insurance companies with suspicion and by them "trusting" you to have the right documents and not actually checking, it means there's one other way they can catch you out at claim time if you haven't checked.

I thought it's common for insurers to want to check your licence in the event of a claim - if you've not declared any endorsements they can invalidate the policy.

But I don't think they check licences when you take out a policy - after all that would cost them money ;)

Same as most people never been asked.

I can see why though, cuts down on fraud. Perhaps you are considered higher risk than most.

Have you had points at some point and declared them, then conveniently "forgot" when taking out a policy since? They probably think something doesn't quite add up...

I thought they just randomly checked x number of people? Like 1 in 20 gets checked so they can add that to statistics they hold? Of 4 years of insurance (4 different companies) I've only ever been asked to prove my NCB twice.

Considering I rely on my license for work I'd be pretty stupid to lie about my license to insurers :)

Had this with tradex for the taxis asked for a copy of all licences for all my drivers both dvla and council issued

My nephew was asked for a copy of his, and then another, and i think the third time round he rang up to be told "it can take a few weeks for us to process them" (which begged the question about why they asked for additional copies twice within about 2 weeks).

I think some companies are probably using it either at random, or if the computer doesn't like something you've told them. I would imagine it's largely an anti fraud measure.
