Talking to mates on email about a night out they had on Saturday, where I left at 10pm because I've been ill and they went off to a club and got heavily drunk.

It wasn't anything much by the sounds of it, just people getting stroppy - no physical violence - but they were drinking Stella and it was always seems to live up to it's reputation in the UK of being 'wifebeater'.

What's people thoughts on this? Does it really bring out the worst in people, or is it just another strong lager that people wrongly-blame for making people aggressive? Or is it that it's a drink of choice by people that are more inclined to get violent, i.e. scum?

Some pubs in Brighton appear to have banned it as the landlord's see it as being an angry drink:

I think no matter what you drink if your going to beat up anyone woman or man you will do it regardless. Perhaps its just the fact they get a bit more cocky/courageous/stupid when theyre intoxicated.

My mate sometimes gets a bit heated after having too many Stellas, he doesn't get the same effect with other beers.

Doesn't beat anyone up, but gets a lot more agressive after Stella's definitely.

Edited due to spelling fail.

It is a fake chemical laden lager imposter brewed in Reading with manky Thames river water. Awful awful stuff. Your friends have no taste or class. :p

I'm not sure Stella actually makes people more violent. It's just stronger than most common lagers so people get more drunk.

I don't believe any of the nonsense about certain drinks getting people more/less/worse drunk than others. It's purely down to alcohol content and the person's mood.

It doesnt have any effect on my anger levels but I do know that even after one or 2 I'm going to feel rough the next day which I dont get with any other high strength beers or lagers. It just seems like a very dirty drink in terms of abusing my body

It's strong lager in general, the fact that more people drink Stella is why it gets such a bad reputation.

I have the opposite and I'm quite chilled drinking Stella but drinking Kroenbourg is like drinking pure violence with me :(

It's a nonsense, Stella doesn't make people violent - it's a lager same as any other, perhaps its reputation causes a psychosomatic effect but the ingredients don't. It would be interesting to see a double-blind test (or maybe I should say it wouldn't be) as almost certainly there would be no more violent reactions from people on Stella than any other lager of the same strength.

However if drinking a lager makes you violent then it's probably time to look at your consumption habits and yourself rather than blaming the alcohol.

Stella's marketing in the UK is golden, Its sold to us as some form of "high" quality expensive beer when on the continent its considered little more than tramp fuel. Sup up.

It's just cause it's strong. The only drink which does make a difference to aggression levels is buckfast abbey. That is laced with caffeine and in conjunction with it's high alcolhol level, it makes people much more aggressive.
