well ive had this pc for a year and a half now specs currently are

core i7 920
12 gig ocz
4x RaptorX 150gig
nvidia 295gtx
asus rampage 2 mobo

im thinking of going for the upgraded gfx card 580 and using my 295 as a dedicated physx card , many people doing this or should i just sell the 295 ?

im not worried about the money as i proly wont get back on it what i wanna know is if its gonna make much diff in FPS

ive also got an older 7900GX2 (half of my old QUAD SLI RIG) sat in a draw perhaps i could use that if physx

Need an 8 series card minimum for PhysX. Unless your playing Mafia 2 tho very little needs or uses GPU PhysX currently.

Maybe sell the 295 and get a cheap 712mb 460 if you really want a dedicated physX card.
That way, lower noise, heat, and power consumption. And maybe better performance if PhysX only uses 1 GPU???

Personally I'd get rid of the 295 and just stick with the 580...

Even the 460 is overkill for physx tbh. imo the 580 is powerful enough for both games and physx but if you insist on a dedicated gpu then perhaps something like a GTS430 or a cheapo second hand 9600GT/8800GT.

I agree, the GTX295 is complete overkill for PhysX and hardly the most effecient card. Would no doubt add quite a bit to you electric bill over time, even when sat doing very little. Stick with a modern card anything from the low end of the 400 series would be ideal or even as suggested a cheap 8/9 series, 460 again though would be overkill.

460 isn't overkill for physx. the issue is there's not a single physx heavy game out there that a 580 can't handle alone; unless it's 2560 res with mafia2 with 3d. (even then it's fine).

well its gonna be sat there why not use it it can only help in physx games right?

ive also got a second pc with 2 8800 ultras in it could swap cards about a bit

for me a 450 would be the ideal physx card but buying it at current prices dont make sense

For the sake of the environment dont use the 295 for physx!!!!!

But the thing is running both graphic and High PhysX on the same card could cause a bit of stuttering and make the gaming less smooth, which is why it's always better to have a dedicated card for PhysX, and leave the main card handling just the graphic.

+1 It IS completely overkill and a waste of electric.
If anyone can show benches were this card would be an advantage for Physx over say a 450/8XXX/9XXX then fair enough but I doubt it very much.

What are these must play Physx games you need this for?

ive got a gtx 480 and you need a physx card when playing mafia2 im playing that game now and im looking for a good physxs card. says you need a gtx285 recommended

yeah i didnt mean in sli, i just ment using as a DEDICATED physx card with no sli bridge it has to give some performance gains right ?

i understand why people say its very powerful card and its overkill but its prolly more powerfull than a 460 and its basicly a dual card the 295gtx so would only be able to use 1 core by the looks of things, i also got 2 monitors so aint it gonna be better for dual monitor setups (ie game on 1 and windows on other not multi screen gaming)
