Just watching Coppers...

It's quite pathetic. Unfortunately when something is so widely popular, it becomes 'cool' and those who don't do it are typically 'uncool'. It's difficult to be the 'uncool' when you're stuck around loads of people of the binge drinking type. I find myself often ridiculed and mocked, as if I'm some sort of loser because I don't like their lifestyle.

Yeah, I've done it myself, I've been a part of it at times. But not to the point where it requires police intervention, mind. But I know of several people who do. Most of them work with me and I have to hear their moronic stories of how they got "proper leathered last night".

Unfortunately it's unlikely to end soon. It's self-propagating. If people enjoy it and think it's cool, they'll keep doing it. Maybe until they die.

i often go out with mates and do what the media and government describe as 'binge drink' but none of us cause or get into fights , none of us end up in hospitals , we all enjoy ourselves and we all contribute massively to the local economy.

Until you end up with cirrhosis. ;)

Binge drinking happens evrywhere. Go to any Scandinavian or former Eastern Bloc town on a weekend night to see.

The big problem is that in the UK people get drunk out of their heads then fight or break things.

In other countries they get smashed and just sing old songs about their country.

The yoof of today in the UK are just not proud of their heritage, or indeed have never been taught to be proud of it. Poor upbrigning.

Therein lies the problem. In my eyes anyway.

I found last nights quite funny it just reminds me of being at work and good to see the coppers do exactly the same as us and spend most of the night taking the michael out of the drunkards and hoping thats not how they look when they go out on the lash

A very British problem unfortunately. My motto is if you can't drink and enjoy yourself, without getting punchy, don't.

eh?

It's not remotely restricted to the UK

I lived in NYC for nearly two years and saw just as much binge drinking there, same with all my times spent in the alps, the french, russians and any other nationality you could think of all drink massively in excess with the firm goal of getting ratted.

I must admit it makes for disturbing viewing, I admire the police for the ability to handle the people in the programme. That said I've been on the wrong end of quite a few nights which have ended up with rather messy outcomes. Still it earns the government £80 a time so it's not without it's penalties

Genuine LOL!

Even that nice quiet work colleague you grow so fond of....Check her facebook page and there's a picture with her dress around her neck, lying in the middle of the street with wet pants.

What's her name and where does she come from?

OK.

Just watching it now... is it just me or are the women arresting people for dumb reasons? I know I'd take them as seriously as the guys in the programme did.

Two blokes humping on a car... fair enough - but giving them a leaflet with a map of the town and where they're banned from... for answering back - lulz, that'll work

And how they keep telling folks to stop swearing is hilarious... I wouldn't be able to help myself :p No wonder the cells are taken though... arrested for swearing... arrested for fighting with girlfriend...

ahahah guy who got assaulted got £80 fine, gg. guy who assaulted him... caution

What a loser the guy's friend was @ the end... following his moron friend like a brainless sheep.

I had the same thoughts watching this - it doesn't really show the police in a good light... if anything, it showed them on a bit of a power trip.

There is something ironic about arresting someone for swearing whilst also swearing at that person (******* <word for ****>). The two lads were complete cocks, but the attitude of the arresting officer did nothing but aggravate the situation.

Then there was the two lasses who arrested one of the meat heads who was blatantly sober and just a bit loud. Why? A stern telling off was all that was needed.

The couple having an argument in the street - did they really needed to waste their time on that?

And then there was the guy who had his nose broke by the hulk getting arrested in the station for drunk and disorderly, when he was quite clearly compos mentis.

They spent half the episode complaining that nobody respected them anymore - the respect was there to be lost. Some within the police do not do it any favours...

Aye, just a midnight rant, tbh. Just can't be bothered with it all, was wondering if anyone else was in the same boat.

I watched it, but found it funny. Reminded me of the funny sights when I used to work the door :D

1) that person started swearing first. The police officers told them calmly and politely to leave. They only started swearing when they were abused and their buttons pushed. This is human nature and entirely understandable

2) the meat head was arrested because he broke the instruction to leave. Theres no point in having powers if you arent going to enforce them. I suspect taking him back to the police station, then releasing him without charge was entirely down to his calm behaviour. Had he kicked off, swore, kicked and punched as they usually do, he would have been booked. Nice to see officers using the power of discretion for a change instead of reading from a book.

3) the couple were arrested because there is a clear force policy on domestic disputes. This is born out of years of experience separating domestics, leaving the individuals, then being called back out again later in the day, again and again as the argument goes on. You can't separate the parties involved in a domestic the way you separate two randoms from fighting in a street. So it's best just to nip it in the bud and arrest both. Where does it end ? when they start fighting again ? when the mates turn up and join in too ? or when one of the mates stabs the other ? Domestics can so easily escalate its easier to stop it early.

4) the bloke who was punched by the hulk was arrested for being a ****. I wouldnt say it was obvious he was copis mentis at all. He was play acting like a girl, mouthing off, he had the smack from the guy dressed as the hulk coming imo. Whatever they put on the charge sheet doesnt really matter, he was arrested for acting like a ****

5) The respect was lost by the police themselves was it ? in your opinion obviously. 'Cos its cool to hate the police isn't it ?

.

they were showing off in front of the camera and showing complete disregard for somebody else's property. Experience has shown them that this type of behaviour is only going to escalate. Yes what they were doing now didnt seem that bad, but thats why they have the instruction to leave.

It stops it escalating and doesnt fill up police cells.

He got arrested when he didnt comply with the order. As already said theres no point having powers and then not enforcing them.

A series I've been following on 4od but the inevitable happened, a bloody episode on binge culture! Got half way through and ended up so sickened, left with a general feeling of how much I can't be arsed with it all and switched it off.

I'm only 21 but walking around town, hearing stories from mates/colleagues, watching programs on it just makes me sick to the stomach.

Why? No idea! It's just a brutal mess that practically everyone does. Even that nice quiet work colleague you grow so fond of....Check her facebook page and there's a picture with her dress around her neck, lying in the middle of the street with wet pants.

Does it bother you or do you just get on with it or even participate? Call me an old fart but I really do despise this ideology that binge drinking is the only way to have fun.

What a waste of a bloody episode :p

The westgate run in wakefield is my local

I can confirm its like that every friday and saturday night !!

The police did get powers to close the road off friday and saturday night under some new government powers, but they didnt apply to make them permanent so they lost them so the road stays open now. Number of people who get knocked out wandering into the road with all the taxis is stupid.

Sadly however, as you saw, leeds is no different !

I watched it, but found it funny. Reminded me of the funny sights when I used to work the door :D

Priceless isnt it doing that, everyone should have a go at that job for the laughs :)

Personally i think its a generational thing

In exactly the same way that parents of previous generations have seen Rock and Roll as the death of society, and the Free Love of the sixties etc..

There's always something that the current generation doesnt like about the habits / tendencies of the newer generation.
