***The Official Gran Turismo 5 Thread***

When the PS3 was announced, some little jap dude (Sorry! Im bad with names :p) Was all like "and bring with it all of the previous generations best franchises such as GT, Tekken [...] at, or shortly after, release".

So whilst not officially announced, it was hinted at.
Unless you count Prologue i guess, but that was a disgrace of a game.

Known issue, it's the equivalent of a tank slapper on a bike

It's apparently possible to tune this so called 'dead zone' out using software on a PC. Not sure about PS3/G27/GT5
as the post gimp decided not to deliver ANY mail to our part of the village yesterday so I'm still awaiting delivery.

Yeah, Fanatec added a 'deadzone' setting on the wheel for GT5p, and I've had to just use one notch of it, or I get the dreaded tank slapper if I'm not paying attention.

Why oh why there aren't deadzone/range/limit/linearity settings in GT I don't know..

And speaking of wheels etc, I've got two issues between the wheel/game and not sure which is which

1. Brakes - setting ABS off makes it a totally different braking experience, you can't brake remotely as well as the AI, the wheels start to reach peak retardation at 50% brake input, get to 75% and you've lost all steering and started elongating your stopping distance. Not only that, trail braking to an apex (trying to keep the car settled) has the cars loosing grip and sliding far too readily. Turning ABS to just '1' is like having uber ESP, not only can you mash the brake pedal much harder, stop much quicker, but you get no sliding at all under trail braking. I'd be interested in any other serious racers opinion on this on try it and see if it's just me..

2. FFB effects seem to be largely missing, there is the obvious wheel weighting for general driving, that's good, no problems, but things like scrabbling tyres from the line, there is no sensation what so ever, no torque steer, no 'feedback at all'.. Also there is little track feedback too, e.g. SSR5 banding, lots of bassy audio, nada through the wheel.. I was hoping for a more visceral experience.

The other funny thing is my brother came over at midnight last night to have a go (His pre-order didn't turn up, and he's a huge GT Fan), the first thing he did was the Licence tests, and was a little shocked at the graphics to start with, the Alfa Ti in the B licence test, you go in cockpit view, and the little display between the rev counter and speedo was massively blurry compared to the speedo, which had him questioning my version, teh same went for the drafting in the concept car looking thing with the purple spirally bits around the speedo, they where also looking quite poor, and shattering any illusion of a super crisp 1080p rendition, so the question is, is this different for anyone else?

I just wanted to post my initial impressions of the game, and initial impressions are good!

I had a few hours with it last night, and while the immediate impression was one of boredom, as I expected from the licences and initial races, it soon became great fun.

To get it out the way; yes shadows aren't brilliant, and neither is the way the game handles cars in volumetric fog (although the fog/spray/dust by itself is stunning). I haven't encountered any tearing issues, the frames have stayed high and it's looked stunning throughout.

The handling is much improved and the cars feel great to drive, although the slower and heavier cars feel like driving a housebrick.

I had a quick go in arcade mode to try out the faster cars and more exotic circuits.....The Special Stage in the rain in truly a thing of beauty, even though the rain effects from the interior view were a bit of a let down; the shading of wet tarmac + fireworks is possibly one of the most graphically impressive scenes in a game. The faster cars handle exactly as I imagine they would, nippy and frightening!

Over the course of my 3 hours with the game it just got better and better, more and more fun to play, and I've barely scratched the surface.

I fired it up quickly this morning to grab some photo-mode shots to USB and the online portion appears to be working.

Sorry my overview is a bit short and dis-jointed; I'm trying to cobble it together at work quickly.

Can't wait to get home tonight!

9/10 on eurogamer, which is the same as Forza got, if memory serves. Take your pick, really. I'd rather have the deeper techy tuning and smooth graphics of Forza, but I'm also envious of GT with the weather, the wider event roster and so forth.

All being well Forza 4 will spank GT5 by incorporating some of it's features! We wait to see...

c'mon postie! *paces around house*

never had a ps3 before, anything i should do with it that is'nt in the manual?
plug power, hdmi, ethernet, turn on register id online, install gt5 go!

You forgot - update PS3 firmwares.

You should be playing by about 6 oclock then ;)

If people are getting consoles delivered today I would wait at least an hour for it to warm up to room temperature before turning it all on, chances are its been in a cold warehouse all night with the cold/frost and when you turn it on, its going to warm up very quickly and cause some condensation.

My opinion so far:

With regards to the IGN Review, I wouldn't call it zombie AI. At least the drivers do try to avoid ramming you off the track all the time like they do in forza3.

After doing some licenses and a couple of races I'm starting to get into again like I did with GT3/4 but I still have some niggles.

Firstly the sound is a vast improvement over previous GT games including prologue. However it really isn't perfect. For a start the Shelby Cobra sounds about right on idle and upto 1000RPM but after that it just goes completely down hill and sounds nothing like the real thing. Some of the cars like the Mines R34 skyline sound great. Surely they could have managed a meatier V8 sound.
With regards to the sound overall, I completely understand it being quieter/muffled in the car but externally the best sound is only from the rear view camera and I cannot race like that. I wish either the bumper or roof cam could have had sound "similar" to the rear cam.

If they only model 200 odd cars with interiors then I would have loved the dials and gauges to all be crisp and clear but mostly they look pretty jaggedy, some are worse than others and sometimes look awful.

Jaggy shadows have been there since prologue and maybe it's more of a hardware thing and to be honest I can overlook them most of the time.

The tyre smoke effects look lovely but why do the edges of the car go all jaggy and black when passing through smoke?

They are my main niggles. Overall with regards to the physics and the racing I love it. The premium car models look fanstastic externally and the fact that we get 800 standard cars isn't really a major issue. Maybe I'm just nitpicking. At the end of the day it's still great to play and I actually even felt like taking the day off to get some play time in so it can't be all bad!

Or warm it up nice and quickly with a hair drier.

hmv was open before 8am lol

Mine wasn't....

Was late to class too. The flat tyre excuse always comes in handy.

id agree with the ign tbh, the ai is bad in this game, not as bad as previous versions but compared to forza its miles behind - they simply dont care that your on the track and wont break appropriately or move and of course they never make mistakes.

found another bug last night (infact two in the space of 5 mins)

1) some car wing mirrors lose there mirror image and basically glitches in and out on some tracks

2) on the top gear test track with the vw, if you are in cockpit, press reverse view then back again - look at how the screen has suddenly got a lot darker whilst gradually getting lighter over 10 seconds. repeat and rinse to instantly feel like your driving at night.

these are stupid bugs, that just prove that despite all these years making it, theyv been to busy with the pointless details as apposed to fixing game breaking mechanics.

id agree, so far forza is the much better game. for all the hype of the graphics in the gt5 i actually think forza looks better, i really think the shadows and murky textures outside and in the cars of gt5 really spoil it.
