***The Official Gran Turismo 5 Thread***

Okay, help me here, i'm rapidly losing the will to play this game.

It was going alright until the go-karting. Is it just me or are they not much fun? It just seems to be what it would be like if we lived in a world where there's no friction. They oversteer everywhere.

Still, I somehow blagged my way through that, only to run head-first into the NASCAR.

It looked really good from the video, but it's well and truly burst my bubble. I admit, I have no prior knowledge of NASCAR but are they meant to well.. not turn pretty much at all? It's like the total polar opposite of the karts, but even less fun.

So I move onto Top Gear. And here's where I totally lose it.

They put you in a van which feels like it has 1hp. And at the back of the pack. On a narrow track. Which you can't deviate from because you'll lose. And you can't run over certain cones, because you'll lose. And you can't touch the other vans, because you'll lose. But they can block you and generally get in your way.

And if you break for them - which you have to do - you don't have any acceleration to catch them up with.

Is it just me, or is the person who thought this up deserving of a spiked baton up the jacksie? :(

the karting is good fun imo, just gentle taps of the steering and slight deceleration is the key to those things - also getting out in front asap will help since the stupid ai just bash you out of the way.

havent done enough of nascar to pass judgement on that im afriad but did feel a bit heavy.

and yeh the top gear VW challenge is really frustrating and a bit stupid really.

luckily these are all just added extras and not required asides from money/levelling.

Can any one give me some advice on what are the best driving options for a pad user are i'm pretty much using the defaults with traction controll off.

Is there any that give a advantage in terms of cornering speed.

Yeah I couldn't do the Top Gear VW challenge either. I have no idea how to do it.

It is possible.

I managed to get close enough to tap the 1st van at Gambon, and therefore fail, at that point I got fed up and bought a 300SL and did some old school races.

They are all possible, you just have to be spot on everywhere, and the only way to do that is do it 100 times until your perfect. :/

Well I have to admit, I was expecting "L2P NOOB" or something along those lines, but it seems that others are having trouble with it as well.

I played GT2 a crazy amount, so i'm certainly not crap at the game but I wouldn't call myself great either. I just drive very aggressively - I like to push other cars out of the way if they won't move over, and cut them up on the corners etc.

yeah, its devoid of fun unfortunately

Not a huge fan of the karts either, I don't think the mobile chicane AI really helps matters, as for NASCAR I found it really easy with a wheel, but the events were totally pointless.

Those buses caused me untold pain I was first until the penultimate corner where I was disqualified. Slipstream is the key, also ignore the braking line for the most part if you're using it.

Overall the game isn't too bad, I wish I could race what I want where I want and that the AI wasn't so endlessly pathetic. There are a few other things that bother me, I don't feel like this is five years worth of development.

Hmmm no game is quite tricky, might want to watch the example replays in the license mode? They do contain some really useful tips.

the top gear camper van race, you need top slipstream a lot, and overtake while taking the corners, you can actually bump into the vans provided it doesn't push them out the way...??

i managed 1st at the race - but only after I raced it for how many times i lost count..

Game is very hard to master. Quite addictive though, stick with it, sure you'll get there in the end....

Ugh, I can't do the Top Gear track. Score one broken sixaxis, launched across the room.

I'm going to bed. :(

It can be done Tute, I did it on my fourth of fifth attempt, After first race, I thought there was no chance.

I noticed than you can make up a lot of time on the corners, particularly the last two. As others have said, slipstream all the time. You probably don't need to brake as much as you think. I simply ease of the throttle and knock it into third for all but two corners, other than the flat out bends. And try and avoid contact on the straights as kills your speed. Annoyingly while the AI is improved the dumb ******** will still try and take the racing line when you are there on a regular basis. Particularly coming out of corners and your on the outside.

Things you CAN do.

You can stick a couple of wheels on the grass or over the lines defining the edge of the track, just don't go wildly cutting corners,
You can tap and rub the AI. You have to hit them pretty hard to get DQ'd
I think the only cones you cant hit are the solid red ones, ok to knock over red/white striped ones, I think..

Trust me, once you do it you will wonder what you found so hard. when I finally managed it I passed the van in the lead going through follow through on the second lap, easy win.

And on the screen tearing issue. It's most definitely there. It's fairly minor, I've seen far worse but there is definitely tearing. And as others have said we all have the same hardware so should be no inconsistencies.

Loving this so far, only been using a pad as ive nowhere to mount the wheel yet though :(

Level 8 at the mo, the little 89 Civic race car you win is damn good! Just have to decide what sexy new car to buy with my £145000 budget...

Apparently I've completed the game now, even though I've still got lots to do.

Also... *spoilers*

Won a Veyron from the GT World Tournament. Fully tuned now and it's over 1150 BHP. It FLIES!

I almost gave up after that, Rage worthy race! go off line a tiny bit and disqualified grrrr! I spent about half hour I think only to get second, I swear I was first as I was along side him but apparently not :(

Otherwise quite enjoying it, got it last night after work, almost lvl11, the go Karting is way to easy, I hope the special at lvl17 is more of a challenge!

Not enjoying the load times and slow menu's, considering it took over half hour to install :(

Apologies if you have mentioned (long thread) - what control method are you using?

I sold 3 kidneys and have the fanatec Porsche Turbo S ultimate edition. (just the wheel + clubsport pedals) It's working out well, especially the onboard menu/configurability, I've set up a preset for Karts with much finer control around center, and added one notch of steering deadband to reduce the tankslapper effect on some circuits!

If I wasn't bothered about 360 support, I'd have waited for theiruch cheaper 911 carrera wheel, just as configurable and comes with shifters etc but £150.

Can anyone recommend any kind of frame that I can mount my G25 onto? I have my PS3 infront of my Sofa and I dont have anything to use to mount my G25 onto.
