***The Official Gran Turismo 5 Thread***

Can anyone recommend any kind of frame that I can mount my G25 onto? I have my PS3 infront of my Sofa and I dont have anything to use to mount my G25 onto.

Yeah Ironing Board or a Wheel Stand Pro. I'm looking at one of these, or really considering making myself a bolt together racing frame with seat...

Level 8 at the mo, the little 89 Civic race car you win is damn good! Just have to decide what sexy new car to buy with my £145000 budget...

In the exact same boat, love that Civic, maybe if there's a premium version i might splash out on it as it's a lovely car to drive.

Got around the same amount of credits and same level, tried the Lotus top gear challenge and that car was a dog to handle, need to stop spinning at turn 1.

Regarding load times, will a better HDD help things?

I've still got the one that came with the console, and i'm looking at more storage, so will a 7200rpm improve things, and can it even handle an SSD?

Loving it so far though, don't really mind the standard cars much, it's just more incentive to plug away and get those premium cars.

probably a wheel.

Pad, no room for a wheel :(. Can't even fit my feet on the floor let alone pedals

Guess again :p

7200rpm drives help loading times on some games, most of the time there is no improvement. SSD gives no increase at all, unlike for computers :(

I didn't think above 5400rpm worked?

It works, its just not "recommended".

Well that was an utterly anticlimactic night for me, an hour and a half after first putting the disc in, updating (and failing, twice) then finally installing what I am left with is a slow, unresponsive and somewhat buggy interface.

Once I actually got down to some racing I don't feel any better off than with Forza but it's early days yet and I will definitely stick with it.

/edit first night report:

So, first night playing GT5 and I gotta say I'm hugely underwhelmed. I pop my disc in and the first thing it wants to do is update with a 133mb file so I let it, this fails 3 times before it finally goes through and installs, so thats 20mins down.

Moving on to the actual install I kick it off with the timer saying 20mins which I thought was fine, 45mins later its just finished up and I can finally start playing, but wait, something isn't right, the menu's aren't loading up properly so on the "start" screen I am sitting there waiting almost 5mins just for the cursor to come up so I can pick GT/Arcade/Options. Finally I can start doing my licenses and some actual racing, wait, what's up with this ****ty ps3 controller? Its about 2 sizes too small!

After reconfiguring the controller for Forza controls I am set to go and I went through the B license mostly silvers/bronze, I will re-do to get all golds I just wanted to unlock some races. I did a couple of races and I'm pretty happy with what I've seen, I'm not bowled over or amazed which is sort of what I was expecting but it's not leaps and bounds ahead of Forza but it is early days, I've only put in a couple of hours on it so I am expecting better things.

Overall I am disappointed, it seems unfinished, all the attention has been placed on the driving experience and the menu system seems like a bit of an after thought at first impression as it seems very clunky and cluttered, I will however stick with it and I'll be playing it a lot as I've got a 3.5 day weekend coming up!

Does the PS3 come with a defrag tool at least?

Over the years i've installed and deleted loads of stuff, and im pretty sure the install will be fragmented to bits.

Not really sure anything will help drastically, the GT5 load times are what they are.

No it doesn't, besides since the improved transfer rates of a clean 7200rpm drive help very little a defrag wouldn't improve very much.

Does everyones game access the blu ray drive after install? Just making sure I have done everything right, because the drive is still being accessed after I have supposedly installed everything?

Personally I thought the load times were fine once I'd unplugged the ps3 from the network and from what I remember I don't think the menus are that much slower or more cluttered than any of the previous Gran Turismos.

The game is pretty much what I was expecting as these over hyped games are always a bit of an anti climax.

The shadows are really poor though and I have seen a couple of tears but nothing major. Also, I don't think the standard cars are as bad as people are making out but then again when I'm driving I don't use a view where I can see the car.

Overall I'm enjoying it the racing but PD should be ashamed of releasing a game with these network problems and blatantly obvious glitches; especially as it's meant to be a flagship title for the PS3.

Started hacking through the licences last night, still loving the game.

Do I win the ghetto wheelstand award?

It's an old drum rack, solid as a rock!

no you install the majority of features not everything....mainly for copy protection which is why it still accesses the BD frequently.

Some are worse than others, I've seen a few that look horrendous, like GT1 running on an emulator or something :/

I have yet to see anyone beat the ghetto remove the back of the chair mod, which I thought was just inspired!

I forgot who's it is though.

As mentioned previously an ironing board actually work very well, used to use one. As for stands I'd recommend taking a look at the Speedblack Evo and Wheel Stand Pro. Use a Speedblack Evo myself, very good.
