whats the most serious illness/health problem you've had

Back in yr9 of school I had a virus :(. Knocked me down for something like 5 months and then I spent another 3 months easing back into life.

In it's form it was very similar to ME, but fortunately nothing like as intense. Know some people that have taken years getting over ME :(.

Man flu, very serious

Got this at the moment.. hot/cold flushes, head cold, tired and I feel rough as a dog. Will be having tomorrow off.

Diagnosed with a bit of 'IBS', triggered after gastroenteritis, which can cause you to feel drained every so often.

I had ludwigs angina which is basically an abscess in your tooth root that breaks out of the bone and into the gap between the muscles. It pushes up under your tongue and if left causes asphyxiation as the abscess works it's way own your neck and applies pressure to the windpipe. Your skin also goes red. Teach me to leave fixing a filling until after a 2 day trip to Iceland. Lost the tooth.
If it occurs in the teeth in the triangle drawn out of your nose and mouth then the abscess exit is into the cranial cavity is extremely life threatening as it applies pressure on the brain and blood supply..
The result is that my teeth have warn down faster (with no molar back there) but I'm alive :D

Very little wrong with me compared to many.

i have had my little finger amputated.
i crushed it at work, and while the hospital were flaffing about i ended up with gangrene.

also all the usual other stuff, like man flu (very serious :p) etc....

I've got a few things, i've had severe Scoliosis of the back since i was born resulting in a hump along with serious heart issues including a hole in the heart, a dodgy Aortic valve, which has since been replaced with a nice new carbon fibre one, and a double Aortic arch.
Also got a rare form of Epilepsy and Asthma

I'm also a stubborn sod and i don't let any of the above stop me from doing what i want. Despite the heart i've been drumming since i was a kid and i don't like being treated any different to 'normal' people. I have to be reminded to slow down from time to time :)

*Edit* And despite the Epilepsy i'm currently learning to drive as it's not as bad as it used to be

Holy crap, with your luck I'm surprised you're willing to even leave the house. Fair play for keeping going!

I'm feeling pretty good these days actually although I am suffering from exchaustion which isn't good. It's all about putting one foot in front of another.....

I swallowed a 2p coin, it landed right of top of my wind pipe and I past out. Got to the hospital and I had flat lined.

They shoved something down my throat to suck it out and brought me back to life.

Also fell down the stairs when I was a tiny baby as my dad had left the gate open. Broke a few bones.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome

When I was 9. Pretty much almost died, 6 month recovery including learning how to walk again.

Paralysed from head to toe, collapsed lungs and having to have your eye lids taped open is not a nice experience. Being sick out of your nose was cool though

Worst I've had is running into a lamp post and splitting my head open when I was 7.

That's all.
I feel lucky compared to you guys.

You got any lasting disabilities? Other than my balancing being a bit off I made an almost full recovery.

Thanks for responding, I wasn't sure how comfortable you would feel about talking about it on a public forum. I'm currently on the largest dose of Prozac (60mg) and its not so effective anymore so I have been pointed in the direction of Venlafaxine which has been highly recommended for anxiety and depression. Through out the following week I will slowly be moving from Prozac to Venlafaxine and then obviously onto the max dose of Venlafaxine (75mg).

Wow, are you a big guy? That's a pretty high dose!

I've been on 30mg Citalopram daily for 6.5 years now for OCD and anxiety. Thankfully it's under control and I'm lucky in that the meds don't give me side effects other than horrible dizziness when I forget to take it. I can sometimes get horrendously anxious for a few days after a heavy drinking session though.

These days I can empathise with anyone who has suffered from some form of mental health issue. Before I was ever affected by it I didn't give a toss and was of the belief that these people should just 'pull themselves together' and 'get over it'. How wrong I was. When I first started suffering from anxiety I actually thought I was losing my mind. Being constantly on edge and anxious about everything was incredibly draining and I eventually ended up with severe depression. I tried for a long time to cope without medication, but at one point it just became too much and I had a meltdown in the doctors and caved in lol. Couldn't get em down me fast enough at that point.

Maybe you're not happy to talk about it, but have you had CBT or anything like that? I finished a course about 4 months ago; it's not a magic bullet by any means, but I foud it quite useful. We moved on to ACT instead of CBT towards the end of the course, which I found to be much more helpful. http://contextualpsychology.org/act if you haven't heard of it and are interested.

It's much more of an acceptance approach to things rather than trying to fight / combat negative thinking patterns.

Double post, but never mind.

Jesus wept Robdav! - Reading back through the threads again makes me feel slightly daft for even mentioning any problems I've had. Compared to the kind of grief you've had in the past most people are lucky!

Your resolve is certainly very inspiring and massive well done on the blog too

Cheers

Previously on Citalopram, ended up not really doing anything so currently on Venlafaxine.

I was on citalopram, seemed to help for a few months then just tailed off. Now on sertraline, much better:).

Just been prescribed citalopram and first time I've ever had anything for depression. What changes, if any, will I notice taking this? Is it still safe to drink alcohol whilst on these? Not expecting any miracle cures but the wife just wants me to stop having a face like a slapped a**e :D

Was on citalopram for 4 months, worked wonders, think you have to find yourself though while on it, life is hard taking drugs is not an option, harmful to your body (liver, brain) if you have to depend on it you will end up in a loony bin

Most painful... kidney stone. Wow did that ever hurt.

Most prolonged... Leg broken in 5 places and in plaster for nearly 6 months. Happened a couple of years ago and not great 2 weeks into a new job. Hurt quite a bit too, especially when I tried to walk on it right after breaking it.

Most life threatening... A boring old appendix when I was 12.
