Who will ditch 580 for 6900

is this the same dave that has old topgear on his chanel, if so if one of you know him. Tell him to stop wooing the ladies and GPU's, and get up to date programming.

Latest rumour I've seen(didn't check too many pages back so might have been up already) is that the 6970 is faster than the 580gtx in 3dmark 11.

a 5870 around 1238, 580gtx 1748, 6970 1807 points in the extreme performance numbers.

5870xf is 2300 or something. So that puts it just ahead of a 580gtx and essentially 50% ahead of a 5870.

where did the rumour come from ?

3D Mark 11 isn't a great indication of performance tho as I'm guessing we will see 2-3 driver revisions yet before either lot of cards are giving optimal results in it.

Good question, I would also like to know.

6970 was almost certainly delayed to eek out some performance over the GTX580, so we should expect it to be faster. I'd be surprised if it wasn't really. Nvidia are feeling confident though, delaying their '595' until Antilles.

Shant be long until we find out, no doubt there'll be some leaks to come in the next week or so.

Personally, my 5870 plays everything I ask of it and more, not going to waste my money with no decent titles out atm to push it. In fact, could probably have gotten by just on my GTX 280, but that'd been no fun now!

The same can be said of roughly, anything, ever, as in any game, and every driver can potentially increase performance. Without optimisation the driver does what the driver does, feeds data to the card which pumps it out, theres room for tweaking but those numbers are fairly suggestive of data we've seen for Vantage which has been heavily optimised for, IE its the biggest performance lead over the 5870 for the 580gtx, which shows in those numbers.

EDIT again :- Incidentally, is the 6970(assuming those numbers are real) just great in Vantage/3dmark 11, or is it 50% ahead of the 5870 in almost everything, while the 580gtx's strongest showing is in Vantage and is a little less fast in everything else. Would be pretty awesome if it beat it at its best, and was generally faster by a larger margin in actual games.

As for architecture, well, the 580gtx isn't disimilar to the 480gtx, or previous gens to a large degree, and with a fairly simplifed shader structure(vs AMD) theres not a huge amount of tweaking to be done.

If anything the 6970 is the biggest change in shader structure, dispatcher, rop/tmu engine AMD have seen since the x1950, so theres a LOT of potential driver performance bonus's to come, I'd suggest, theres a lot more potential for driver performance improvements in general in any game for the 6970 at this point, over the 580gtx.

EDIT:- Sorry, and the rumour came from Chiphell, no idea on the veracity of the numbers as yet, but its about "that time" for those kinds of numbers to start slipping out. The other numbers are hard to quantify, because we don't have 3dmark 11 yet officially(do we, I haven't paid any attention to it, maybe its out :p), the numbers appear what you'd expect for all the other cards, but then, if you were to make up numbers out of thin air, those differences are the ones you'd use so who knows :p

Yeah but 3D Marks 11 is still in early days, developers are still punting stuff back and forth so any number of issues i.e. shader compiling could be opptomised in the next little while producing completely different results.

Its just a benckmark it means nothing upside down, back to front with or with out driver tweaks.

We have to look at at least twenty games to just get an idea of what sort of performance any card will give us.

who has the highest 3dmark 11 will be classed as the fastest card imo.

but i wouldn't trust these numbers floating about on the chiphell.
They are talking about an unreleased benchmark running on an unreleased video card = fail. But I got a sneaky feeling that when 6970 is announced so will 3dmark11....hmmmm
