best way to take currency to usa?

A bit of cash and a Card to take it out the wall when you are there. You will get a better exchange rate

I did this everywhere I went with my Nationwide card

thx for suggestions, are fair FX considered the best of these pre paid debit cards?

also my gf plans on buying a hand bag of some kind for around $2000 so dont fancy carrying that around.

OMG JUST TAKE A HALIFAX CLARITY CARD ARHGHGHGHGHGHGHHGG :p

Why mess around with prepaid debit cards etc etc? Especially if you are going to spend at least $2000!

Watch!

FairFX rate today £1:$1.53
Visa Wholesale rate today £1:$1.58

Therefore if you buy using FairFX, you will pay £1307 for the handbag.
If you buy using a Halifax Clarity credit card, you will pay £1265 for the handbag.

If you withdraw cash from an ATM using a Halifax Clarity and pay cash, you will pay £1277 for the handbag (ie, you will pay circa 1% in interest).

Have I proved my point yet?!

I keep saying this and you keep ignoring me, hopefully now I have demonstrated you could save nearly 50 quid on that ONE transaction by listening to me, you will pay attention :p

FairFX rate is constantly fluxuating but often considered the best, it hung around 1.63 for a while a few weeks ago.

5* for this thread for making Fox burst a blood vessel.

But MSE says go with the card, and they are experts!

would this halifax clarity not have a limit like any other credit card?

as i said above we plan on spending $3000-$4000 minimum.

Of course it would, but unless you've got a billion other credit cards or you are a jobless student then you'll easily get a limit high enough to cover your spending.

If you are wealthy enough to waste $2000 on a handbag then I'm sure you've got the credit rating to get a half decent credit limit.

No, dont take cash! You'll get a terrible exchange rate.

Seroiusly what is it with the bum advice in this thread?!

GTFO ive been twice in the last 2 years and it was by far the best option, keep giving bum advice though

The best option you knew of. I've clearly demonstrated above, using facts taken from both lenders websites, exactly how FairFX is NOT the best option.

How is it 'by far the best option'?

keep giving bum advice though

You are joking right? How can you argue that my advice is bad in the face of the figures I've taken the trouble to calculate?

Bump to this

Of course it would. It's is the question no one will have the answer to though only halifax after your application.

Even if you get a smaller limit I would advise to make payments to the card throughout your stay through online banking to firstly minimize the interest charged and give you further available credit when the payment clears.

Applied for a clarity card but I've only had my first credit card 4 months so they only offered £1000 credit which is not really enough so I will get one of these debit type cards from the post office.

At least use that £1000 before you start using the debit cards.

Also, you are going to a great country full of great places to visit. Don't waste $2000 on a damn handbag, spend it on amazing experiences instead.

Sadly some people need $2000 handbags to feel like they own something special, this was the reason I got rid of my last woman, all items and no soul.
