The Ashes 2010-11: Australia v England ** spoilers **

To be fair, we've batted brilliantly. Aim will be to bat so we can't lose and see where we are at then.

I think Strauss meant he hasn't even thought about declaring until we are in a position to declare. Intriguing test and long may it continue in the series.

Tempted to chuck some money on England to retain the ashes. As has been said already don't think the Aussies have enough to take 20 wickets on a regular basis

Of course that's what Strauss meant, we're only 80 runs ahead not 180..there's still a massive amount to do just to save the Test let alone think about winning.

Evangelion is still bitter after we 'drew' our way to the Ashes last time :p

Draw has now become the most likely outcome imo. For Aus to win, they'd need to bowl england out in 30-35 overs tomorrow, and that just doesn't seem likely. For England to win, they'd have to do about the same, but also have set an unreachable target.

Bit late in finding this thread. :p I think a win is out of our hands and considering we're just one wicket down in our second innings I think the tactic should be to bat for as long as we can, sensibly, and just run the overs down. I cannot see how we can put enough runs on the board to stop us from losing AND have enough time left to bowl the Aussies out. Considering the state of the scores after both first innings to be in a position to draw is a remarkable turnaround. Pity its like this but hey-ho we'll just have to win the next 4 Tests. ;):D

Obvious to most ;) just thought I'd clear it up:p

England could still win if all the batsmen started batting like sehwag. They'd put on 150-200 runs in the first session.
You mean snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and employ bouncebackability? :p I suppose as we're down under things are reversed. :D

Of course there's a chance we can still win but I'd be happy with a draw. :)

Yep. Cardiff was a case in point. Looks like it's happening again, which is why we have people saying things like this:

Now Strauss says he doesn't intend to declare. Does that sound like he's aiming for a win?

Comments like this really make me wonder whether you understand cricket, or indeed sport in general. If you're in a bad position, as any team is after batting first and beginning the second innings behind, the first goal is to avoid losing the game. It's very rare and very difficult for any team to win a game from that situation, and, particularly this early in the series, no team is going to try and force a victory that risks losing the game. Even in the Australian glory days, Warne wasn't able to force victories in similar situations on English soil (thinking back to the fourth and fifth tests in the 2005 Ashes).

In cricket, it's very rare that both teams are in a position to win the game and it's usually a battle between one side wanting to win and another trying not to lose. That's why those rarer Tests with a final innings chase of 200 or so are so compelling because it's one of the few occasions where both sides can win, but no sensible captain would willingly put their team into the fourth innings in a situation where a loss was still on the card. Especially not at the start of a series likely to be as close as this one!

The stats do show that England have had many more tied games than other Test sides but there is one reason for that: rain!

And so it begins :)
Cook and JT going along nicely so far, would love Cook to get a double cent, deserves it after all the stick hes been getting recently (Im guilty too :( )

-edit-
Bit of luck with the edges, but Trott scoring pretty quickly (for him :p) and a lot less scraping around then usual, he must be relaxed for a change.

-edit 2-
150 for cook :)

Thats like 5 edges in a row now? Lol
Riding their luck a bit ..or rather would be, if there was actually any proper slips in place .

-edit-
Trott edged and dropped.

An important factor in this series is the fact that there are very few if, any english players, that have been scared by playing agasint the aus. its quite the opposite, there are many in the side that are used to winning the ashes. But not in aus though

Nice wide Mitch. Throwing runs at us now.

It's like Cardiff all over again: a superior Australian innings let down by poor Australian bowling. England will be happy to dodge the bullet and take a draw, of course.
That's funny, I was thinking it was a decent first, and a mastercass second innings by England, let down by the umpire letting Hussey off when he should have walked for LBW is his 70s.

Dont know about decent first innings, more like mildly acceptable :p imo.

We should really be attacking this kid, havn't seen anything from him yet that looks threatening .. just a typical slow bowler ? North looked more threatening tbh.

Cook into the 170's ! Closing in :)

-edit 2-
Cook's best ever total in tests up!

The way Aussies are playing i can see no reason why we cant attack and get a decent lead by just after lunch and stick them in to bat, see what happens!
Who knows.

200 partnership

-edit-
Love the look on Trott's face :p hes in a mixed state of disgust and confusion all the time :D

-edit 2-
400 up.
