The Ashes 2010-11: Australia v England ** spoilers **

The crowd out there will go mental if Ponting loses his wicket :p

Must be very odd for the Aussie team looking to save a match in front of a hostile crowd at the Gabba - which incidentally now has a certain Mr. A. Cook as the highest-ever scorer at the ground :D

After both first innings I didn't think we'd get a draw. Well played to Strauss, Cook and Trott for their centuries, especially Strauss after his first innings duck. Congrats to Cook for his first ever Test double century.

I hope this result winds the Aussies up. I don't think they like it up 'em.

That is genius!

" I AM NOT A FREAKING CRICKET MATCH!!! That means you @matywilson @zandertrego @thesummats @ atonyboffey @faz1988 and MORE "

Lol if I had a Twitter account I'd immediately send her abuse. About planting my stumps on her wicket, letting my balls bounce over it and playing cricket on the wicket.

England were never going to bowl out Australia, but what a performance from the openers. Should hopefully give them lots of confidence for the next game.

The pommy boys played well in the end.

I am just godsmacked, it was just ball after ball of non threating deliveries on a ground thats always been exciting. I should know as I'm a Gabba member and used to always go to the games before moving over here.

This will give England huge confidence going into the second test match :(

Well, I predicted a draw two days ago, and I'm happy to be proved right.

Aus need to be carefull not to be to far behind before lunch. Has Evangelion gone to bed, hes awfully quite:D

Mate, you posted this at 11:58 (Adelaide time). Why would I be going to bed 2 minutes before midday? I was already several hours into my working day and having vague thoughts about lunch. :)

Great day for the Poms; simply magnificent batting against a toothless Australian bowling lineup on a dead pitch (not to mention all the dropped catches!) Strauss wisely held out for a draw, which was a sensible decision because the events of Day 4 virtually precluded a win, and since England currently retain the Ashes, a draw is as good as a win for your side anyway:

"At the end of the day it's a draw, but after the end of day three we would have taken a draw, there's no doubt about that," Strauss admitted.

I think Australia will lose this series. We've spent the past few years searching for bowlers to fill the shoes of Warne and McGrath, but to no avail. There's just not enough grunt in our bowling attack, and our batsmen have been patchy to say the least.

Beefy had me loling earlier, he said that the austrilian crowd had come as plastic seats for the fancy dress competion.

If I lived in QLD I wouldn't have bothered turning up for a draw either. :o

I hope this result winds the Aussies up. I don't think they like it up 'em.

Yes we do, we're a right bunch of filthy *******. As they used to sing of Mr Siddle: "Siddle! Siddle! He takes it up the middle!"

What a stunning fightback by England. I can't believe they aren't 1-0 down! Amazing stuff from the openers. Cook must have some serious mental strength for a youngster to bat for that length of time.

It looks like 2 bowlers will change for the next matches. I wonder will it be Hilfenhaus as the second? Johnston definitely will go.

Doherty... outbowled by part-timer Marcus North, that's depressing, although his first-class record is absolutely appaling. I've no idea how he's playing international cricket :/

I'd be surprised if Johnson got dropped considering everyone for some reason loves him, unless they're really trying to prove a point I think he'll stay in.

I'd say Hauritz might get a recall again - his experience would count for more than the young kid.

Edit: maybe he isn't even in the squad in which case he won't be!

What an amazing fight back by England to get the draw. True colours have been shown.

England 2nd Innings 517 for 1 (152.0 overs) declared:

Strauss st Haddin b North 110
Cook not out 235
Trott not out 135
Extras 37

Australia 107 for 1 (26 overs):

Watson not out 41
Katich c Strauss b Broad 4
Ponting not out 51
Extras 11

On paper England should win this series quite comfortably. Australia are without a decent blower and their batting lineup is struggling with form atm. Englands only worry is... well they are England and they like collapsing!

Speaking of true colours, let's check the 2nd innings run rate.

  • England: 3.40 runs/over
  • Australia: 4.12 runs/over

While we're at it, let's check the 2nd innings strike rate:

  • Strauss: 49.11
  • Cook: 54.91
  • Trott: 50.75
  • Ponting: 121.43

Hmm. I bet Strauss was glad he'd declared late.

Well said.

Well what an anti climax that was;)...so the first test is drawn which just about says it all...nice double century from Cook and Trott with his century....problem is the Aussies no longer have weapons in their bowling attack ie Warne is gone, McGrath is gone etc and thats also impacted their batting with Ponting/Clarke pretty much out of form judging by past performances.

Although to be fair the wicket was a tad lifeless in the 2nd innings.

Hopefully the next test will be a better affair with at least one side winning....one can only hope.

Frankly, if the English Ashes squad can't beat the current Aussie lineup, they need to get themselves checked for quadriplegia.
