I've been lucky enough to be able to save a few quid for a decent setup and I was wondering what you think of this lot?
Also what Memory and cooling should I get for this set-up?

I'm getting the 1200W PSU because I think it worked out at needing 1050W for the setup but I'm just leaving a good margin.
The only absolute musts in the lineup are the GTX480s (or would I be better off with 1 580?) and the Antec 1200 case.

Any help much appreciated guys, I hope to get this before Crimbo, for meself for Crimbo :D

I'll start off by saying what a lot of people who reply to these posts say.

In January the new generation of Intel CPU's comes out (Sandy Bridge). Jan 5th according to the always reliable Wikipedia.

If you don't want to wait, I'm not, then a lot of people recommend the i5 760 over the i7 as the i5 is a great ocer and seems to be the best bang per pound for gamers.

I'm not waiting for the new CPU's as I want mine before Xmas and also there is a VAT rise come January and I'm tight. Also the i5 760 will suit my needs for a good few years. My E8400 system, which I built 2 years ago, is still fine for everything I do (but I WANT to upgrade).

Once the usual faces wake up I'm sure better advice will be given.

Ouch shipping @ £62.35 and vat @ £437.99 kapow. best part of my build there.

Anywho. I would wait mate in all honesty with that money. the gtx 580

If you can't at that price range i would go i5 760 with gtx 580 (to sli) or i7 930 with (580 sli?).

You need to decide really what you exactly want to do with it.

The i5 would be a great system. The i7 would benefit from triple channel memory.

Do you plan on overclocking because that board is a beastly overclocker?

Cheers Skylineboy,
This system is mainly because I'm excited about trying the 3D, it'll obviously be for gaming, looking forward to Crysis 2.
I wasn't actually planning on overclocking as I 've never done it. Would I be better off cutting back on a few bits (ie as you say lower spec mobo) then so I could maybe get the 580s. seems as I won't be overclocking?
When you say GTX580 Sli do ye mean get 2 GTX580s?
Thanks for ur comments

i'd lower the mobo so you could get the 580.

fairly certain he meant go with the 580 , then you could sli it in future over going with the sli'd 480's.

yes you are right that was what i meant. It would be worth it in your price range for you to go for a 580 now then add another if you have enough left.

SLI is to use multiple nvidia cards. I would drop the board to something like this:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-399-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1692

Ram: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-042-PA

Does anyone know power ratings for the gtx 580 range?

Apologies about last post, was kinda late. Wow i was tired.

sli for the 580 is around 450-500w under load from bits i've seen, but a 1000w psu should have the overhead to deal without and have no probs.

stick around matey, that isn't even close to being able to be considered a tired post, mainly cos it makes sense lol.

Holy crap. Thats some kit. for that money you might just be able to hire a couple Merc's to take you into the jungle and shoot things for real 3D lol. Normally I would say wait till Jan as not only will the new intel chip come out but the top end ATI card will be out to and they might have an effect on Nvidia prices to take the price down a bit but with that kind of cash your spending not sure money is an issue for you :)

Thanks for all the advice guys,
Thinkin about the 580 with the lower spec mobo alright.
Almost pressed the "Proceed to Checkout" button a few minutes ago, just thought I'd check back first. :D
Fair play.

The Sandy Bridge guys, is that going to be aimed mainly/completely at Mobile Units ie Laptops? I thought that's what I read ?

Expensive spec. I thought Ireland still has poblems growing potatoes? :D

I kid, I kid.

Like others said, I would wait fo Sandy Bridge too, it seems very promising.

Yeah, as others have said, wait a month, with that kind of build cost you wouldn't really want it to be outdated in a month - and even though tech moves along fast, it's almost got to a point where SB is just too close around the corner - plus multiple Graphics Cards are on their way (think the 570 and the 5970)

Even if the Sandybridge does push down the price of the "standard" cpu, I would imagine it's going to be slow to reduce.
It's not as if we won't need graphics cards with the Sandy Bridge, how surely will a graphics chip on the cpu replace a pair of 480s or 580s?
I'm sure u guys can enlighten me :)

@Garonazz "I thought Ireland still has poblems growing potatoes?" lol , no we're still pretty good at growin spuds..... I hear. :D
I'm still not sure about holding out
Thoughts anybody?

I think you need to read a bit more regarding Sandybridge to be honest mate.

Although the chips arriving in Jan are to replace the I5\I7 1156 chips, the K versions (2500k and 2600K) may well be very fast.

They also have the GPU onboard which will be of no use to most people who read this forum, but that disables itself if it detects a GPU in the system.

Lousy Sandy Bridge article is lousy.

SB will include 32nm i5s and i7s which will be faster clock-for-clock than current i5/i7s, and the unlocked k versions will likely overclock much better than current chips too. All this coming in at current price levels (probably a little higher) and the k versions aren't supposed to cost much more than the locked versions. Definately worth waiting to see how SB benches/clocks.

570s already a better choice than 480s if you can get them, but new AMDs due soon could be better still. Patience :)

I would also wait - unsure about SB tbh but on the gfx front definitely wait for the 6950/6970 to be released and see how they perform.

If I was spending £2500 on a gaming rig RIGHT now however I would do this:

Benq XL2410T 24" TRUE 120Hz 3D Widescreen LED Monitor - Black x3

MSI GeForce GTX 470 Twin Frozr II 1280MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card x2

OCZ Vertex 2E Bigfoot 120GB 3.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive x2

Corsair HX 1000W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-1000HXUK)

Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4 Intel P55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Motherboard

Intel Core i5 760 2.80GHz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156) - Retail

Nvidia GeForce 3D Vision Kit

Antec 1200 Twelve Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black

Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9) x2

Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B CPU Cooler (Socket 775/1156/1366)

Sony Optiarc AD-5260S 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM
