I'm on the upgrade road and man it's really tough I need a spread sheet for all the options and that's before I make the choice between AMD and Intel lol

I'm currently on ASUS P5QPRO E6400 and 4870 ATI card.

I was thinking along the lines of buying another 4870 and Xfiring the cards

But the mobo cpu and ram combos are just very difficult to understand 4 core or 6 core, USB3, SATA 6 etc....

Be nice if the overclocked bundles section contained an non-overclocked bundles option. I know I could probably research it myself but it could be something like "this is a good recommened option for each budget type. "

Much like the pre-built systems.

but they have systems and overclocked bundles already I don't want an overclocked bundle just the system bundle without tower or PSU

Probably easiest for you if you post up what you want as a budget, what you already have (mouse/keyboard/monitor and any hardware you intend to keep from previous computers) and just ask for someone to suggest builds, they tend to be pretty good here :)

I know the guys on this forum are the best as sorting through build specs...if they had some pre-made bundles I might not need to ask ;)

There's certain sweet spots at different budget points and the forummers here generally keep up with most hardware activities, so the best way is to post your budget, what you need and what you need it for and you'll get some great suggestions.

Motherboard socket / RAM type / Sample Processor:

775 / DDR2 / Intel Exxxxs and Qxxxxs

AM2+ / DDR2/3 (depends on board) / Anything with AMD on it

1156 / DDR3 / i3s and i5s

1366 / DDR3 (triple channel) / i7s

AM3 / DDR3 / Anything you can buy new with AMD on it

I suppose it probably wouldn't be worth the time for overclockers to make a non-OC bundles section, as iDroid said the available motherboards/RAM are changing all the time and most people buying individual components generally know what they're after.

As a general guide:

Most 1.65V RAM will work in any DDR3 motherboard (AM3/1156/1366) however you need to check the motherboard specs to check the max speed the RAM will actually run at on that board.
Any 1156 chip will work in any 1156 mobo
Any i7 1366 chip will work in any 1366 mobo (be careful with the Xeons/dual socket mobos though)
Check the CPU compatibility lists for AM3 motherboards, different Phase Power Designs support different wattage chips
USB3 and SATA 6gb/s are supported on some newer motherboards, check the specs if these are features you need

The problem is OP is that there is plenty people will help here to put current specs together for best bang for buck. The ongoing changes means that there is no point adding sections for current working componants that are well together.

It would take someone a full time position to work it all out properly and then keep changing it every week or even less depends on what componants and how fast OcUK stock new items.

Not worth anyones time to do it, just ask it's easy.

thanks guys any reason for sticking with intel when you can get

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-267-AM&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1328

for 135 quid

Scrub that just looked and it compares to the I5 760 2.8

Ok supposing I go down the Intel I5 route what's the best mobo P55 or H55? I'd like to have some future proofing so SATA 6Gb and USB3 .

I'll keep my 4870 ATI card for the moment...

I'll need some ram as well seems like there are 3 flavours to choose from 10 12 or 14k dual channel. Also will 4GB be ok can't see me using any more than that to be honest. Mostly used for Gaming.

P55 is H55's superior, with more features and (generally) more overclocking potential. Be sure to get one with two x16 PCIe 2.0 lanes for ultimate SLI/CF performance. 4GB is more than enough for gaming, but get 2x2GB to leave 2 slots open for for future upgrades.

RAM speeds don't make an awful lot of difference gaming-wise, but I believe 1600MHz works better when overclocking the i5. Be sure to get a trusted brand like Corsair.

thanks for the update

i'm going to wait until Jan to see what intel brings to the table and see if there are any price drops at the end of the month.

Yeah but a VAT increase of 2.5% to a £500 set of components (assuming OP only needs the mobo, ram and cpu in which case £500 is a reasonable budget that accounts well for stock fluctuations) will mean £12.50 difference... not really that much tbh

I'd say its much more prudent to wait till the changes Sandy Bridge brings

it won't be 12.5GBP difference since everyone on the way, from manufaturer itself to wholesalers and shops at the end will round up the VAT.

Example, manufacturer sells for 319GBP, wholesale for 349, shop for 399.

Now 319GBP + 2.5% is 326.9 but instead they will make it 329,99 or 330 to round up.
Then you get the next one which will be 359 instead of 349, so 359+2.5% which will be 367 but let's just round it up to 370 since it's easier for them and then the shop will end up somewhere aroud 420/430.

All businesses will use it to their advantage and you cannot do anything about it, it will end up with around 5-7% increase instead of 2.5.
If 1000GBP rig goes up to 1049 instead of 1025, nobody is going to come to your shop with spreadsheets and calculations showing that you should only increase the price by 2.5% and not any more, you won't be able to prove or do anything.

On topic tho, I'd just put a 2nd hand Q6600 in for now or try to get cheap 2nd hand AM3 setup.
You probably won't see much out in January, more like Q2-Q3 2011.

A move over to AM3 from what you have, if you search around MM will cost you not more 100-150GBP total or even as low as 50 if you decide to stick with DDR2.

Either of those will serve you well untill the full new tech comes out middle next year ( well, they will probably last a lot longer but if you wanted bigger upgrade then this will tide you over easily ).
