**** Original Starcraft 2 Thread ****

Oh dear, hadn't played since August and jumped back in last week and it's been tough. Wasn't exactly good when I left (was Gold, almost Platinum) and just been losing to some stupid stuff, just feels like every time I make a step forward I take two steps back, lost to people just massing Void Rays and another Carriers.

I seem to struggle with deciding on what to build, and being far too passive, or I'm over aggressive. ZvZ also makes no sense to me at all.

I think I've realised my (current) problem.

I seem to be so obsessed with going for a certain "thing", be it Collossi or chargelots or whatever, not inherantly bad of course, however the way I'm executing them is leaving me massively open to being torn a rather large new one, I just end up leaving myself way behind and constantly gas/mineral starved. Need to sort out timings more carefully I think.

I also really need to stop doing a pilon/gateway half wall against anything but zerg, it's just causing me problems. GOD DAMN YOU HABIT!

My macro is now very good so I always have a buff base and eco, but my micro simply isn't up to scratch, especially when I try and push with a harass early, my macro falls away.

I know my problem is I don't scout or harass very well, I typically like to counter attack but that leaves my opponent room to build-up.

Watching the Day9 videos of the Dreamhack Tournament has opened my eyes to how awesome their micro and macro is, particularly the micro tactics. Insane skills... but then they've probably played more than 150 games like me. :)

Bonus pool builds at 1 pt per 2 hours I think, so 12pts per day. You need to get on more, I've 0 bonus points! Game launched end August approx, so call that 90 days therefore max bonus points is 1080 for anyone that joined on day 1 and hasn't played any game.

This has probably been explained a million times but I'm still not 100% certain of how it works...

Can someone explain leagues, divisions, ladders to me!

I know there's copper, bronze, silver, gold, platinum, diamond.

Then in each league there seems to be 100....divisions? And are there a number of players in each division? Or are there parallel divisions? Who do you play against? Oh god, I'm confused again already.

All I know is that I'm nearly gold league (I think)!

Divisions are slightly confusing at the moment.. but from what i understand, it goes like this:

you have your divisions Bronze / Silver / Gold / Diamond.
for each divisionn there are hundreds that are similar, so lets say theres 100 Bronze leagues, 100 Silver leagues etc etc..

Lets say you have just done your placement matches and got put at 75th place in Bronze. you'll then play against players in other similar divisions, with similar status. As you win more you will get matched against players at the bottom of the league above you and so on. (to see if your good enoguh to be promoted)

Once you get promoted, you'll start playing against players in the league you just got promoted from (this is to see if you didn't fluke wins to get promoted). You'll also play players the same level and players above you (so you can improve and move up the ladder)

Its just logic really, and Blizzard say that it should work out at approx 1:1 win/loss ratio. which is a good balance to encourage improvement and more gameplay

things to take into account...You will play against players, not necessarily of around the same physical rank, but more so based on how many points you have.
Also, You don't need to be rank 1 to get promoted, it can happen at any time. Obviously, the mroe games you win, the higher chance of promotion... unless your Houd.. in which case he's doomed to rank 1 platinum for eternity ;)

EDIT: as i said, this is from what I understand... not fact!

Sounds about perfect from my experience as well :)

I still come across high ranking platinums occasionally, never see houd on the ladder though :D

Seems to be more down to points than anything else, so points 'adjusted for league' which would determine whether a player is 'favoured' or not. e.g. 800 platinum ~ 1200 gold might be an even match as an arbitrary example i just plucked out of the air.

EDIT: Although on second thought it still says that people 6-700 points lower than me constitute an 'even match', so I'm not entirely sure on that tbh

You generally get matched against people of similar hidden matchmaking rank. This hidden rank ignores leagues which is why I sometimes get platinum players instead of diamond.

As for the divisions within the leagues, they don't mean anything. When you get promoted, you get added to the next available divsion. For example, say there's 50 diamond divisions - that means at least 5000 players because every division has 100 players. So there's 50 divisions, and the 50th has 35 players in. When you get promoted to diamond, you'll be the put into division 50, player 36. Placement in particular divisions doesn't have anything to do with your skill, it's just the order of players who get promoted. The reason you see stacked divisions full of pros is because they're the very first created diamond divisions and the pros were the quickest to get promoted.

I've been playing as 'toss and have been doing fairly well (6 wins 3 losses so far today) but every time I get rushed by marine/marauders I always fail. I can't seem to spot it in time and never have enough Zealots up to defend from it.

Any tips for repelling a marine/marauder rush?
