Student protest today - spec me a sign

According to twitter violence has broken out in Lewisham between police and protestors. Although according to twitter Ancelotti resigned last week...

Get of my lawn :)

Back in the mid nineties a whole bunch of students, probably equal in numbers to these recent protests turned up in London to have a good old whinge. The government were trying to put through some laws trying to ban the kids having parties in fields at the time.

Kids like to have a good old protest some times, doesn't always mean they are protesting the most important thing. These fees are unwelcome, but there's no ****ing money left so unsurprising. If you want to have a rant about something, read some Naomi Klein or Noam Chomski.

After reading this thread for the past few weeks it's quite easy to notice the the one's who have spoken up the most have been against the protests.

This might be a worthwhile read for those who don't see the point in the protests: http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2010/nov/30/tuition-fees-study-government-progressive

Not only does it state what most students involved within Students' Unions and NUS already know (and tried to tell people about) but for anyone who actually read the browne report could have worked out with a bit of background research into other key industries graduates go into, such as teaching.

The Guardian has actually really impressed me with their reporting on the protests and related issues. Like you say, most of the people voicing their opinions against this have done very little reading in to it.

Champion! Top marks for the Alan Partridge reference.

Mine would be "Higher tuition fees? Well beat me to death and call me Ian Tomlinson!"

Just been loads of ******* again in Newcastle city centre whinging on this dinner time which was rather annoying. Well done you've just wandered up and down a highstreet a couple of times and all you have achieved is annoy a lot of people and cost a fortune in tax payers money by needing 200 police in presence to make sure you don't **** about.

Also it's clear a lot of them aren't doing economics degrees and must think money is infinite resource, if the number of free education signs were to go off.

So you do economics? The economics are obvious, the government are making a very short time fix for a very long lasting problem. The proposed situation continues to make more debt for this country at an increased rate than the current system does.

That's right, there's no money left. Well apart from the money the government have found for bailing out Ireland, letting Vodafone off a £6bn tax bill, corporation tax discounts. It's funny how the government can always find money for their pet projects, but it's a different story when it comes to anything that would benefit the majority of the UK.

Police blocking routes and causing aggression

Peaceful protest is peaceful.

Exactly what I just got caught up in on my way home from lectures. Police blocked in the protesters (and me :/) at the bottom of Tyndall Avenue and as a result everyone panicked and started fighting. Took me a while to convince an officer (with my bike in tow) that I was in fact just trying to get home and that I wasn't looking to punch him in the face.

Awesome :/ A serious show of force, I think I counted over 20 riot vans, 3 dog squads and a lot of the mounted division along with various other units. Could have been handled better... Although it probably wouldn't have been so bad if the chavs/***** school kids/drop outs weren't hanging around merely looking to cause trouble. ****s!

Haven't seen plod look so happy since the poll tax riots!
You can almost see the £ signs in their eyes.

It was mentioned at work that these students have definitely helped some coppers out with their OT before Christmas! :p
