*** The Official HTC Desire (Bravo) Thread! ***

Oh, I've done it. Opened UnRevoked and chose Custom Recovery from the file menu

thats what I did, it found a desire and rebooted it and pushed the file but it just reboots my phone. Ah well I can do everything I want for 1.7 :D I have a feeling its because I dont have the right drivers in device manager installed....

Eurgh the DesireHD ROMs are awful and full of bloatware and duplication:

  • SoundHound - Ermm, no thanks - I get free unlimited tagging with Shazam without your 5 tag trial.
  • Locations - SatNav is awful, slow and ugly and there's about 3/4 different way to access locations
  • Skins - WTF is Wood?! It's like some of the crap you find on XDA. What were HTC thinking?
  • HTC Likes - Thanks, but I have a perfectly good indication of applications are good via the Market comments. Android is too fragmented without you adding to it also HTC!
  • Twitter - Why would I want Twitter and Peep?!
  • The widget / shortcut adding menu - they've filled it with crap. If I want to apply a skin, I'll go do it via settings.
  • The above applied to lots of things, they've basically added about 1,000,000 ways to do the same thing!
  • For example, the recent applications in the notification bar that's only one row tall forcing you to swype through recent applications. It's quicker to hold down the home button as it has two rows, showing you more applications in one go. *****!
  • I forget what else got to me, but they've made Sense 2.0 a load of bloat! Sense on the standard Desire is perfect, fills the gaps stock Android doesn't fulfill.

The only thing I liked was the Music player (even though they've tied it into Amazon MP3?!) and the email client.

As for HTC Hub, what a load of crap. There's third party applications out there that do a better job than this and look better whilst doing it.

If the standard Sense update is as bloated as this, whilst fixing bugs that need fixing, then I'll be changing phones.

Anyone else not able to use htcsense.com? just tried to get some more wallpapers and it keeps saying the server is unavailable at the moment

I finally cracked and rooted again, I'm happy without swapping and changing roms every week as my primary reason was to install adfree. How will updates be handled in the future? Will I have to install a custom rom eventually? Or will OTA updates work ok?

Meeeeh I'm back to my Nandroid of Leedroid. I feel better somehow with Leedroid, like as if it's something better, something more special :p

Yes you can underclock with the OTA but the perflock isn't unlocked, so you have to apply the underclock after each boot up of the phone.

APS2SD, yes you'll be able to use the FroYo built in AP2SD but it's a poor way of doing it.

Is "perflock" only something which can be done when you root? My only reason for rooting is to underclock it when it's got a blank screen, will it be much better if I root for perflock alone?

thanks.

Sorry, re-reading myself in your quote and looks like there's been some confusion. You can only underclock if you have root permissions.

So yes, you'll need to root.

You can disable perflock if you have root in three ways:
  • Via SetCPU
  • Via a custom kernel that has been compiled to not include perflock
  • Via a loadable module and startup script

I think Teppic74's 2.10 ROM with Powersaving modules would suit you really well if you want underclock on screen off. :)

Ahh so I need to root anyway to underclock! looks like i'll be doing it then.

Shame that rom is 2.1 as I wanted to go to 2.2 while I am at it. I'm going off to have a read of some newbies guides to flashing, no doubt you'll be seeing me again on here later :P thanks very much indeed for your post.

EDIT: Told you I'd be back! do people tend to root these days using this guide : http://theunlockr.com/2010/09/20/how-to-root-the-htc-desire-unrevoked-method/ (Unrevoked 3 software)?
