Best way to clear the ice under snow?

Hot jizz, it's salty so it won't re-freeze.

This may take some time however, it may be worth getting some of your friends round to help.

Get a bunch of mates over for Slush Puppies, provide syrup, point at drive way for ice. Provide hammer and chisels to mates. Done.

If you can some how warm sand - probably in an oven (albeit very little to put down at a time) - putting it down can help plus a lot of shoveling and grit. I read that on some canadian website for clearing sidewalks outside your home.

I was planing on putting some of the hot ashes from the open fire down on the ground also.

Congrats OP you managed to create a mass argument in my office about salt's snow melting ability!

The fact that it lowers waters freezing temperature stopping it re-freezing on itself as opposed to actually causing it to melt (such as a heat source) is a difficult point to argue. Even though at the end of the day it does still melt...

All of you who say boiling water are wrong.
Water re-freezes when it gets cold. And it will get cold.

However, oil does not freeze in these sort of temperatures. So boiling hot oil would be much much better. Plus, it will get hotter due to having a higher boiling point.

I see no reason why it would not work!

Righto, I am now very cold and still very stuck in the driveway, Ive managed about a meter square patch, the problem is its not concrete otherwise i could just use a shovel its like some horrible dirt stone grit mixture it has been hilarious watching the other people trying to get out though, i also tried letting the air out my tyres to no avail :(

We have no sand/grit and no way of getting any either being the cars cant get out :P also to the guy who suggested oil what a terrible idea! Ice covered oil sounds about the slippiest thing i can think of!
