Best way to clear the ice under snow?

What I have found easiest is to wedge the edge of the shovel under the compacted snow and lever it. Usually it will break into reasonably large chunks that you can then pick up and throw away.

doesnt work when the surface isnt smooth, the surface is like really stoney soily stuff

start car. allow engine to warm. turn heaters upto max. Improvise a duct system that channels the hot air from the heaters to just in front of each wheel.

Not only clears the drive but also clears wherever you drive*.

*max reccomended speed of .1mph to allow time for ice to actually melt

haha the sad thing is my heater matrix is gunked up so it only blows out mildy warm air at the best of times, meant to flush it through but forgot when changing the coolant :(

haha so I cant even get hold of some grit but I can magic a JCB :p I managed to clear some of it by hitting it with a pick axe but its taking forever and I suspect when I go out again tommorrow it will be back nearly the same again :o should clear over the weekend though.. right??

i'm not normally one to point something like this out, but it sounds like you didn't really accommodate your driving to the conditions AT ALL and are left wondering why things didn't quite work out they way you wanted.

B@

No I did. It's just the snow was too much yesterday, and rear wheel drive is absolute pants in the conditions I was in. At least the car is out now.

Hippo with microwavable 'hot socks' walking up and down for 10/15 minutes should resolve it; though getting hold of 'hot socks' might be difficult as they're incredibly popular this time of year.

Perhaps you should hire someone more experienced..

Why remove the ice? Just drive over it.

Lay some planks down and drive along them, or lay some old carpet down, even a dust sheet might do it.

Let's face it, pretty much all the solutions posted so far involve going outside, and frankly it is a little nippy out there.

I'd suggest revisiting the driveway problem in, say May, by which time I am confident the majority of the problem will have disappeared for 6 months or so.

A trucker said if your stuck on ice at home pour a small amount of bleach on the tyres will soften them up to gain traction, never tryed though. Skyline tyres are like £230+ each :p

Gallon of petrol poured on the drive. Strike match, stand well back. :D

*don't blame me if you set fire to your house/hedge/garden/neighbour/eyebrows/cat

Option 2 - Effective and not so drastic, a large quantity of cheap Cat Litter.

Not cat litter! My neighbour promised to buy me some grit last winter and came back with bags of cat litter, promising similar effectiveness.

Needless to say it did nothing to the ice/snow and is totally indestructible. People were treading it into the house on their shoes and I ended up spending hours with broom, shovel and bucket clearing the god awful stuff up. I dumped the resulting mess on a flower bed and guess what....it's still there a year later.

Cat litter is not an ice clearing option, trust me.

As stated on page 1, i to have heard that warm sand/ashes/embers for a fire are a good way to clear walkways and they do indeed do it in canada.
