***The Official Gran Turismo 5 Thread***

haha, sorry the last post was a bit lengthy but I think it has points that nobody can argue against. Got a bit carried away there, but what I am trying to say, is that this game is only here to allow us to play GT in PS3. It is not here to improve on the series apart form HD graphics which after 5 years is considered a standard affair by now.
The way i see it, I wasted my money because I was expecting something that really improves things. I got nothing of that sort. Just a slap in the face and some ice to soothe the pain in the form of 200 premiums.
Sorry but no matter from which angle I look at this game, I cannot see where all this development time went and why anyone should be praising it.

I mean, how do you rate games?

GFX?
Sound?
Physics?
Gameplay?
Presentation?
AI?

Tell me how would you honestly score this game out of 10 in the above. For me it is below standard in all of them apart from gameplay and physics.

End of the day, despite many obvious issues, it can still provide a lot of entertainment if you let it, and anygame for £40 that has at least 4 weeks if not 8 or 12 worth of content can't really be classified as a terrible game.

I'm with you on the idea that people should moan and PD should listen and they need to learn from this, but it has to be done constructively to be fair..

I keep finding more things I don't like about it every time I play, but you know what? I don't care, I love driving games, I have no allegiances and am not swayed by previous/future games, I just want a solid racing fix, and GT5 is ten times better then most games I've played recently..

My opinion after a week:

I cant help but agree - GT5 is the same 13year old formula/idea re-wrapped in HD graphics, which just doesnt cut it for me anymore - what I expect from a driving game (especially in MP) isnt as one-dimensional and the goal posts have moved far more forward since then and my expectation were for GT5 to move them further not to fall so short.

I guess as a console driving sim its unsurpassed, but the presentation/menu system is cumbersome and the unnecessary grind to get anywhere especially in the first 10-15hrs of the game really puts me off, I just dont have the attention span anymore and thats more the fact that Ive grown up and have less time to game and have more choice on what to play...

I really hoped the MP would have been better, its the first proper GT to have the ability of a rounded online presence and its failed miserably - it seems to be more orientated on shallow social networking than actually providing a genre-defining MP experience, something that TDU got so right. Some will say I expected too much, but you would think the MP really was the main thing for Kaz to unlock, since it already had a feature-full SP. Why doesnt it have car clubs, or something more persistent than just adhoc racing and the only competitive stuff seems to revolve around time-trialling - thats what I expect from a yearly updated series from Codemasters or EA not something PD have seemingly just borrowed...

Then we get to the oversights, the niggles, the bugs which I know people have already said so Im not going to repeat them - my main issue, small though it might be, is wtf doesnt the replay system have the ability to rewind/fast-forward. Im not talking about the graphics or the car list but more fundamental things about how things should work - the polish Id expect that makes things intuitive...

I really hope I get past the first mountain of inertia because I know its a solid game underneath, but GT5 just doesnt help itself. The formula needs to grow up (the whole mentality about throwing in everything but the kitchen sink comes to mind - it needs more focus) and realise a proper MP presence as that will improve longevity exponentially. I hope for GT6 Kaz takes a back seat, hes a great ideas guy but how these ideas interconnect and work and add value to the final game are debatable looking at what GT5 is and the time its taken to get here...

ps3ud0

I guess that makes two of us old-timers, unhappy for christmas :(

Yea, no way to fast-fwd or rewind in replays. I realised that yesterday when I tried to take a snapshot to post in the GT5 gallery here. Needless to say, I didn't have the patience to wait until i got to a good point for a photo.
Haven't tried MP yet and i don't really plan to. I am a loner when it comes to gaming unless a friend comes over.

I just dedicate a few hours in the game here and there. Mostly between study breaks or when it is a day I just don't feel like doing any work at all or going out but as you said, it doesn't help itself. It has come to a point that it feels like a choir. I am finishing now the expert series events and i am still given around 20k per race and some ancient cars from the '80s. The only way I can move forward now is to repeat the same events over and over and try to gather a few million 20k at a time... Thanks but no thanks.

Not true at all. I've only repeated 2 races the whole playthrough and I'm at level 19. Not sold a single car yet so I think you're doing something wrong if you're having to grind already?

what exactly am i doing wrong?
I have won everything up to the expert series with golds. I have completed almost all the special events in a mix of golds, silvers and bronze and I only need to finish two S licences, again all of them so far in a mixture of gold, silver and bronze.
I have absolutely no desire to go back and get everything gold. I am quite happy with golds in actual races but not for licences and special events. It just isn't worth the trouble.

So unless we are not playing the same game, the prizes so far are crappy old cars and the max i have seen from a race was about 35k A tournament gave me around 20k per race plus 100k in the end for about 40 mins of playing. So how exactly do you manage to make money because I have never had more than 500k in the bank and obviously that won't get me a race car. I am also selling most of the prize cars as they are useless and they only clutter up the garage. Prime example: Lambo countach '74. Yea. thats gonna stay....

I think its fair enough to criticize a game (any game) as no game in the last few years has been released and been perfect (me and my flatmate are adamant that the pc gaming patch culture is ruining console games), but some GT criticisms are doing it just for the sake of it... I dont agree at all with this anti lots of cars notion, yeah it is a bit lazy using the renders from gt4 but they are pretty good quality and dont look too out of place. More to the point some of the races and parts of the game are unplayable/just not fun without them, I use the 80's jap cup as an example where I used the awesome 89 mugan civic to destroy the competition :D

The real point is you should judge a game on how much enjoyment it brings you and I use it as a good case of where it isnt really finished (there's been a few things highlighted that can just be patched out) but its still very fun. It is what everyone expected in the sense that it is Gran Turismo in high def, with online options and new stuff. It seems a bit weird that some of us are upset that we have to grind a bit for some of the cool stuff later in the game, but a lot of games do this in some sense (and ones that dont tend to be 10 hours blasts that get shelved in a few days). To enjoy the experience iv got a feeling the same thing as gt4 might have to be employed, which is to find a few cars that are competitive and fun to race in the later races (in gt4 the F1 car and the M3 GTR did this well).

But yeah the only thing in not impressed with is the level system as it takes the point of the license tests away a bit :( (I had a real sense of achievement when I learnt to play 4 properly and gold the tests, which isnt as necessary in this one and requires racing in the main game to get to l15 for the S license)

Still going to conclude that this is one of the games of the year, with civ5 and FM11....

i have done the special events. i am level 19 and i have completed all the special events that are open for my lvl. it's just that there isn't much cash going around if you like to buy a car and then get all the upgrades for it. I only have a handful of cars and only managed to fully upgrade a couple of them. The rest are completely stock or with just minor upgrades. I got an AEM S2000 in my garage and that is the only race care I own. I have to do races now where all the opponents use race cars. I wonder if the S2000 is going to be good enough to beat them or I will end up wasting my time and gathering cash for some better race car.

Not liking the slower cars very much

Get a humongous fast car, pick a track, decide which car will come second. Run interference on 3rd 4th and 5th for a few laps. Overtake your running mate in the last half mile for a nice one two :)

Adds variation to the money getting grind whilst teaching the limits of the tracks and the AI.

Stop talking out of your arse.

You can't impose unfair terms and conditions, this is the internets :D

I still cannot find a pickup truck

I'll lend you one that tops out at 140 mph. It's a right laugh but be warned, the last lap is tricky. Genuine offer, I'll even put a blower on it if you struggle.

Tell me how would you honestly score this game .

GFX - Poor old PS3 .. Port it to PC STAT !!

Sound - 4 - Narrowboat bumping up against a lock, kick drum, or bumming a Veyron into a second gear corner on a tight course 190 mph ?

Physics - 11 - Lots of surprise and delight.

Gameplay - 11 - Lots more surprise and delight to come.

Presentation - Frustrating.

AI - Not nearly difficult or annoying enough. Must. Try. Harder.

My opinion after a week:

Have to agree with 90% of that. Hoping to have the other 10% patched with the weekly updates.

Still 9/10 here though :D

The grind becomes serious around level 25+. I believe it's around 200k(not too sure just turned it off) to my next level. Golded all special events/licences and only have 2 more events to complete in A spec. Later tier events give around 4k-7k in exp per race and I've been playing it very consistently since it came out, seems an absolute age to level up now. Gonna do my first unlocked endurance race tomorrow, we'll see how much exp I get for it. It's gonna be absolutely insane above level 30.

I dont understand why you have no money, its weird. I'm level 19 and I have a tuned Ferrari 458, a Veyron, A maxxed out Gallardo, an old 300SL, and new Merc SLS etc, 1 million in the bank and I honestly havent sold a car or repeated more than 2 races

how did you even get a veyron? i have yet to see it in game. i do have a maxed out murcielago, the fast version of it, can't remember the exact model name.
I also have an RX7, a GTR V-Spec and some other ancient POS cars that I have bought only to use in a couple of races and I will sell soon.
I have not repeated any races yet, apart from going for gold and I don't plan to go back for grinding. If the game brings me to a point where I am broke and I have to grind then I will just drop it.

i just won a GT 350Z from doing the japan series in expert. I decided to throw my Mazda Furai in the heat it seems to be doing just fine, so it seems I had a diamond in my garage. Too bad it is only a standard model.
By the way, this is what the car sounds like:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c23avDQRT-4

Not even close to what the game sounds like. In the game it sounds like any other car. In fact all cars sound exactly the same. Maybe a bit of pitch up or pitch down but fundamentally the same sound. Weren't they promising the record real car sounds a few year back? Why are we still hearing synth sounds?

In fact all cars sound exactly the same.

What are you on about? Loads of the cars sound completely different and many are very distinstic. I think you might need your hearing tested...

What cars have you guys been using for Like the Wind? I heard earlier in the thread that a Corvette ZR1 fully kitted out does it but 700k odd is a lot to blow on a car I might not use again. Nothing else I have seems to have the power to weight ratio needed (Veyron, Zonda R etc). I have the money *just* for the Ford GT LM Spec II Test Car, but as I can't see the specs I'm wondering if it will lose its usefulness later on.

Also is there a way to change the tyres or in A-Spec does it just auto pick the best ones you have for the unrestricted races?

Just before you start the race, under Driving Options you can choose your front/rear tyre setup for the race. Any not available due to restrictions will be greyed out.

perhaps you need to drop your fanboi levels or stop dreaming things.
i have it hooked up to studio monitors and there is nothing special about the car sounds i have heard so far. It is the same story for all cars. Turbos sound identical, gearboxes sound identical, engines are identical, everything is the same except the fact they move the sound pitch a bit up or down.

Watch the Furai video I posted and then come tell me if the Furain in game sounds like that. Or maybe that reality check would hurt your fainboi feelings
