Insurance premiums to increase in 2011

Perhaps not, but still :D.

My head says it's madness to keep it but I don't think I can go back to having a "normal" car :(.

I love these threads.

When i was buying my cat George some Tesco basic prawns and a couple chicken fillets i noticed they were up 11p too, can you believe that **** :D

IPT is still 5% so that's not making the difference.

And to be fair, its only going up to 6% in Jan! :D

Prices really are mad now, my renewal is in the next few days, looking at nearly £300 for a 12 year old, 85bhp family diesel estate with as much NCB as you can get (they stop at 9 years for some reason, what about those of us who haven't crashed for longer than that?)

Really must try and do something about moving my insurance renewal and road tax away from december, it's proving to be an expensive month!

How many years no-claim do you actually want?? The difference between 5 and 9 years is at max 5% in total - you wont get more than 65-70% no matter how many years you have otherwise they will end up paying you!! :p

Best advice is shop round every year - most insurers just bank on the fact that most of us are lazy and will just renew!

Brilliant idea. Go through all that involves putting your house on the market during a period in property sales which is depressed. Then attempt to purchase what will probably be a more expensive property than the one you are currently living in. Move house ( eventually - if you manage to sell ) and go through all the hassles a move involves, possibly having to relocate your kids to a different school. Excellent.

At least after all that is over you might, just might, have saved a few quid on you car insurance. :p

Oh yeah, much less hassle and far less costly than just paying the insurance on the higher postcode. :p :D

hopefully they'll be coming down by 2012 when I start driving.. (unlikely I know)

Don't count on it, all young people have to pay large costs to start off with.

Most people just buy an 11p tin of food, posh git. :p

Thing is you get 3 of these a month, shock horror me insurance is going to be more next year.

Well every other single bill you pay in your life will be more next year, so whats the surprise with this one going up for?

I'm failing to see a problem with this!

AA renewal in the post is £325, AA new customer on the website (with same details) £430. Huh?

I understand it, some don't. ;)

Personally most of my bills have been dropping lately, but I agree, generally speaking everything goes up in cost so it's no surprise if insurance does. :)

It all depends if it's a rise in-line with inflation I suppose. Insurance over the last few years does seem to have gone up at a fairly large rate. I dunno.

No problem with it but do you think its likely??

Not sure you have fully understood the concept of "shopping around" - the idea is to try other insurance companies as opposed to your own! :D

Am I missing something, are we not allowed to be annoyed at ridiculous price increases? Do all the cool people just pay up without a murmur?

You can be annoyed all you want, it won't change anything. Instead, I shop around for the cheapest quote each year first on the internet, then on the phone and insurance brokers. I then proceed to pick the cheapest one.
The rest is out of my hands. If you don't want to pay up just use public transport...

There are other insurance companies? oh my god!

My case is rested. :D :p

Seriously though, I find I'm now a bit more mercenary than I used to be in previous years. I used to be lazy and just accept the renewal notice and any resultant increase because I could not be arsed with the hassle involved in shopping around for a new quote elsewhere. Now I actively seek out a better deal, playing one company of another, for the cars and the bike. That said, it's not just the actual price of the insurance policy you should be considering. It's also the quality of the service in the event of a claim that is an issue. Although most people realise that too late. Paying the cheapest quote isn't necessarily the best plan of action.

"What's this?" I hear you all say?. A Scotsman advocating that sometimes paying a wee bit extra over the cheapest price can be beneficial?. :D

im not being funny, but I must be the only person I know aside from my parents whose premium has gone down every year for the past 6 years!

What was once £700 odd, is now down to just £185.

And thats WITH points added to the licence recently too.

However, on each renewal occasion, the quote through the post was a joke and I laughed. Calling up and redoing another quote online as a new customer was way cheaper, and they always sorted me out with teh cheaper price.

Admiral btw. Best and cheapest company ive ever dealt with.

Strangely enough, my bike insurance on a 1000cc superbike did just that - went down. I went from £300 odd quid fully comp to what I'm paying this year for the RSV, about £140. Wheras the car insurance on both my main car and the wife's puddle jumper has shot up.
