Golf GTI mrkV

Because its a design from the generation before and comparitively ancient?

The mk1 A3/S3 is a very dated car inside and out compared to the Mk5 Golf in my view.

yup dates back to the dawn of time(circa 1996 for the 8l the newer A5 chassis is light years ahead of of the previous A4 in nearly all ways.

Small hatchbacks arent exactly refined if thats what you're after. How about something like an ST220?

Mk1 S3 is not a credible Mk5 GTI rival.

Meh, fair enough.

I guess if you want the perceived refinement and quality, there's little to challenge the GTI Mk.V around that budget. I would consider the S3 Mk.II and 130i as similar, but neither have dropped to anywhere near the value of the Golf yet.

On a slight side-note, what's the Volvo C30 2.5T like? Similar to the Focus it borrows from?

I really like the wee volvo actually, a workmate has a D5. The boot is comically small though, and the t5 would be out of the OPs budget

I didn't realise that MK5 Golf GTi's had fallen that much in price!

And that MK5 R32 is an absolute scam or utter heap. Should be around the £14k range, as Fox rightly says.

early mk5 r32 ala

makes a proper noise :) drives the right amount of wheels and i'd imagine will hold its value better than the gti

Out of the price range for a mrkV and wouldn't want the older shaped mrkIV.

I'd rather have a Focus ST than a Mk5 GTI...will enable you to get a newer car for your money, to my mind it also has a bit more character if a bit more of a lairy/chavvy image.

Focus is a decent cruiser though despite the image, long gearing and torquey delivery, comfortable recaro seats, well equipped in ST guise (although rarety of cars specced with the proper climate control in a car of this calibre is bizarre), a worthy alternative if you can live with the worse fuel economy and the image.

I have been looking at the Focus ST but struggle to get past the "chavy image" you mentioned. Same kind of sentiment with the Mondeo ST as to me it doesn't really fulfil the "refined" criteria.

You might want to explain what you actually want then, as its not refinement in the sense most people would see it.

An ST220 is a more refined car than a Golf GTI - so what are you meaning by "refinement"?

Mazda 3 MPS - I literally know nothing about the car but remember the old one looking very normal with no hint of 'chav' despite being a really quick car?

Total shot in the dark and no idea how it fits in with budgets or anything.

Mondeo ST220 is a more refined car than the Golf GTI - it's larger, with a longer wheelbase and a higher level of standard equipment.

I get the feeling he's after prestige and a few interior toys rather than a refined drive.

I must admit I find my 02 S3 pretty refined despite however old the design, but then again I came from a decatted jap turbo car with a dustbin exhaust :P

No there are quite a few - a hot hatch it is not, though. It's an odd car - the engine is more suited to fast cruising (It gives it a nose heavy nature which is a shame) but then if thats what you want from an Audi why not just get an A4 3.2 V6?
