Spec me some tyres for my Volvo S80 please

225 50 17

All I've had in the past are 15 or 16" Pirelli P6000's on pretty much all my cars, I've searched and read past threads but they seem to concentrate on high output lighter cars, anyone any experience with the barge type of motoring.

I prepared to spend a decent amount of money on tyres but I'm not not buying racing spec tyres either, something good quality.

The majority of the time the Volvo will be at motorway speeds or in traffic not flicking around A roads

Any suggestions

Thanks :)

Continental SportContact 3.

Wow, £146 a corner on blackcircles, used to spending £60 a corner for my P6000's oh well the awful ditchfinders that are on it can go in the bin

I'm going for some rainsport2's on my V70, It currently has 3 x P6000's and a P7 (not my doing!)
Continental SportContact 3 are frankly to expensive, the rainsports seem to be a good price/performance combo, so I will see... £71 per corner in my size.

The S80 started life on P6000's but my father decided to put whatever was cheapest at Kwik Fit at the time, so it has different fronts to rears and they are 'orrible

I dont know where all the sudden Rainsport love came from, never seen anything from them in any of the tests etc.

They seem very highly rated for the price, from what I have read but I'm always happy to be corrected, is there anything in the same price range you would suggest?

Are P6000s not renowned for being chronically awful?

They aint great, thats fo' sho' lol, but seriously they are decent in terms of safety, I am confident with them, but they do tramline a lot, especialy in a bigger car, it just tends to wander to the camber of the road if you dont activley steer them in the right direction.

I would say the P6000 is the bottom end of what I would put on, calling them "chronically awful" would be being a bit harsh IMO.

LOL. There is definitely a noticeable drop in grip as the weather has got colder. I even have three bags of grit in the back just incase and if the weather does get bad it will stay on the drive and the golf will be used. Its next to useless as the roads get icy.

Continental Sportcontact 3 SSRs.

Uniroyal Rainsport 2s are supposed to be very good as a midrange tyre.

Thats the main reason I am thinking of the rainsports, I've had soft sporty tyres on small cars before, but with a bigger car I need something thats going to last more than 8000 miles, perform to a decent level, and not cost much more than £70 per corner.

You don't really need CS3s on the S80, but if you feel like splashing out, go for it.
Can't see why you'd need an UHP tyre though. Check out the P7 Cinturatos. I've seen them fitted as stock to E90s over here.
