Do footballers deserve the money they get paid?

Little discussion for us. Personally i think it's absurd the amount of money that footballers get paid. Surely it will all implode, not sustainable at all!

Thoughts?

Yes they do, the world goes around by money, SOMEONE has to make huge money in this country, it doesn't matter which group of people it is, everyone will think its unfair, thats life.

Simple fact is, we need rich people, and they bring in a HUGE amount of money from TV rights, both in this country and from other countries, money that wouldn't be coming in without footballers on big wages. Half of that money ends up as taxes, paying for your kids to go to school, and your roads to be paved. Every WEEK someone on 50k a year will pay more tax than the average person pays every three years, without that kind of tax income our country would be in major trouble.

Its entertainment, its BY FAR the most popular form of entertainment in this country so why would it be strange they make lots of money.

Film stars make a shedload of cash, for even less work, while a ticket to see a film with them in costs a heck of a lot less than the average premier league ticket.

Football generates a lot of money, better to see it go into thousands of players pockets, than all into the pockets of a handful of owners.

They buy expensive cars, which they pay tax on, they have expensive houses, which provide jobs to be built, and those builders pay tax.

It makes a lot of sense for the more watched and attended form of entertainment to attract the highest wages around, I have no clue why people find it surprising, at all.

Lets say, for instance, that footballers wages were cut by 75%, the tv money was cut by 75%, ticket prices were cut by 75%, what changes, several billion less in tax is collected by the government, and what, who does that help, whose lives does that improve.

Simple fact is, advertising, tv people, they throw money at football as so many people watch it, a LOT of that money ends up in the players pockets, those who generate the viewers, not unfair, and in turn they employ thousands of other people, pay billions in tax which helps pay for the rest of us to get free services.

I think Footballers get paid far far too much. People who save lives doctors/surgeons should be on 5k a week imo. Maybe that's an exaggeration. But footballer shouldn't earn the silly amounts of money they do.
Can you run for PM please? ;)

I wouldn't be suprised if some of the UK's top doctors were on that amount

What a fresh and original topic of discussion.

I think we should discuss 9/11 theories or pirate downloads next.

How about we just skip it all and go straight into a racism/migration arguement.

Cliché.

Taking my club, Spurs, as an example....

We have a wage structure that we rarely break. It's something along the lines of a £60k max.

Only a handful of our squad receive this max, and it's that well balance wage structure which has served us well for a number of years, steadily improving the side. Add to that a great business man, and every now and again we can afford to spend big.

Doctors are paid very handsomely indeed, don't worry about that!

I used to think " Yes the football clubs make huge amounts of money so it is only right that the players get a large cut of this, this is how capatalism works"

But now most of the clubs are in huge amounts of debt and still pay these loons 100k+ a week.

Makes me sad.

Golfers make money from winnings and sponsorship. That is completely different to this topic, you see that surely?

Not particularly and if you read my earlier post you'd see that I have said they are paid what they are worth. Golf is no different to football in that the best players generally make the most money. What is being questioned is the remuneration for kicking/whacking a ball around in comparison to an average wage. you see that surely?

How about footballers who were in New York downloading Finding Nemo while reading a BNP welcome pack?

Who would pay the doctors 5k per week?
I think *some* footballers deserve the amount they get paid. Notably Lionel Messi and David Beckham. Both of which are top players, do a lot of charity work, bring a lot of sponsorship in and most importantly entertain us football fans.
I am a Manchester City fan and we pay a lot of ridiculous wages to players but that is because money is no object. However i think a good strategy for players wages would be a minimum say 10k pw and if they win they get another 30k or if they score 20k or a cleansheet 20k and so on. I think it would make football more exciting and better because i think players would want to play more and work hard. Getting footballers to sign up to it is a different matter :p

If I had political knowledge that actually made sense to others, then I probably would, if I could in my lifetime.

Back onto the footballers topics. Like others have said, the pay should be capped. However, then all sorts of other factors would come into effect as how good they are, what club they play for, what underwear advertisements they do.

They earn heaps, not just from playing on the pitch, but from advertisement contracts, even from selling their own clothing brand. I think footballers especially the iconic ones that are recognised all over the world are more Models now then footballers.

The sport isn't what it used to be. But there is a demand for it, if there is a demand for something, the price is usually silly.

I didn't know you owned a football club?

If he is a season ticket holder he can be said to be a stakeholder in the club. But then you are just being pedantic through lack of argument it seems.

At the end of the day we are talking about a private entity paying salaries that they deem are affordable and justified.

Is this really about what is a fair salary for a job, or just a bit of envy?

Of course they are.

Most footballers are brain dead thugs who would be stacking shelves in Tesco if it wasnt for the fact they could kick a ball quite hard.

The spiralling wages will not and cannot last forever.

In reality, they should be paid no more than £10,000 per week.
