ive got a max of a 800 to 1000 to spend on the following

motherboard
ram
processor
heat sink (dont fancy water cooling)
ssd drive

must be overclockable

what can you recommend?

ive been thinking of the following

Firstly i would go for some cheaper ram than the Dominator as it isnt necessary really. Instead of the Coolermaster V10 i suggest the Prolimatech Megahalems. Apart from that it looks good :)

Hi there,

To be honest I wouldn't go for that motherboard, RAM, SSD or cooler. Instead, this mobo, this RAM, this SSD and this cooler would be a better option IMHO. The CPU is good.

May I ask what PSU, graphics card and case you have?

However, please bear in mind that on January 9th (1 month from now) Intel are releasing their next-generation (Sandy Bridge) CPUs and motherboards that will be faster clock-for-clock than current i7s.

current, or well.... what i had was

q6600 wth tuniq tower
asus maximus formula se
4x1gb geil 6400 ull
1x80 WD for OS
2x500 seagates
2x 250 seagates
graphics card is a ati 5870hd
power supply is a ocz modxstream 780w

case is a mm u2 ufo so space isnt an issue.

could i incorporate a decent water cooled system into my price range?

Fully agree with the changes above. With those, drop the air cooler, and yeah you could probably include a custom water setup for the same budget. Or just keep air cooling and save the cash.

Hardcore, i think for a good watercooling system your looking at 150+..how about a Corsair H70? which is an all in one system.
And i agree with cmnd and Stulid...both are very good specs, Just choose what brands you like :)

what about the asus rampage III motherboard? is it a better choice over the P6X58D or the other two that where mentioned?

Which R3? The Gene is only a micro-ATX - fine if that's what you want. Extreme is a crazy expensive benchmarker's board. Only really worth considering if you want to run benchmarks with quad GPUs and crazy cooling. Pointless for a gaming/normal use rig.

Well the recommendations here tend to be performance-per-pound based, but if you have an overriding desire to achieve a colour scheme and are prepared to pay a lot more than you really need to to get that desired look, then go right ahead. You wouldn't be alone, and it's your money. Just be aware you wont be getting any better performance in gaming, or anything really, for spending £120 more on the mobo. I secretly want a black and white ECS mobo in a white NZXT Phantom :)
