Which drives for NAS?

I am looking 2 2TB disks for a NAS which will write at about 60MB/s and read at about 110MB/s. The Samsung F4s have caught my eye and also the WD Greens but I don't think they are that quick.

Another important factor is the RMA service if the disks fail - I don't want to have to mail them back to some remote island taking 4 weeks to get a disk back.

So, is Samsung or WD support better?

I've just ordered a pair of WD greens 1tbs for my NAS. Can you know how fast they are, although won't it depend on the NAS more then the drive?

Can't comment of support personally.

The figures I quoted above are the NAS speeds and I think some green disk speeds are similar. Just wasn't sure if any disks are limiting in a NAS.

I've had to RMA a couple of Samsung discs, they go to an address in South London and are returned within 3 days, very good service.

That sounds good. I read somewhere the other day on here about having to send some discs to the Netherlands - didn't fancy the postage for that. Mustn't have been Samsung anyway.

Those quoted NAS speeds are for RAID, AFAIK. Even the fastest 2tb drives just sneak 110MB/s average and they're around £150 each.

Well for a Caviar green you're looking at around 85MB/s read 60MB/s write. If you want faster you'll need to spend double the price for a Barracuda XT, 110MB/s read 75MB/s write.

That might explain the quoted NAS speeds i.e. they do it with the fastest drives available, or they are max speeds possible with RAID0.

Just FYI, I'm currently copying an 18.7GB file to my DS210j and it's running at 11.8 MB/s.The bigger the file, the lower the transfer speed. I need to save up for the 710+! :p

Edit; a 1.5GB files runs at 30MB/s read, 15MB/s write
