HTC Desire HD (Ace)

Cool ok I've got that far now thanks :D

Now I need to figure out where to put the .apk file in the "media drive" of my SD card. Does it go in the most top level folder?

I tired the above and used 'App installer' and also tried 'Astro' and after installing the app it doesn't launch or appear in my app list.

When trying to launch it form with Astro after installing it gives me a message "Activity not found"

No problem :)

Oh, woops, just remembered, you don't even need to copy it onto the SD card, if your doing it over the wireless network :p, can just simply go to wherever the .apk is located on your hard drive and select it and you should then get the transferring/downloading notification message and it should then launch automatically asking if you want to install this app, showing the permissions etc. so it won't actually be on your SD at all.

You only need to copy and paste it onto your SD if your using the USB cable, so if you do use that method then it doesn't really matter where you put the .apk as long as it is on your SD card and not the mobile phone memory section with the system files.

I keep my .apks stored on hard drive in the android folder along with all the other android goodies :p

Hmmm, not too sure why that happens, just use estrongs file explorer, it can install .apks as well and it is by far the best file manager on the market IMO.

Also goto "settings", "applications" and make sure that you have the "unknown sources" ticked.

Thanks, I figured it out. I was installing a widget not an app; so it can't be 'launched'! After installing it to actually see the dam thing I had to find it in the widget list and add it to some blank canvas space.
Silly me :P

(first ever smart phone)

Lol :p

Yeah, I can tell that.......

...oj :p

:D

I am sure that it is a massive improvement over your last mobile then :)

It certainly was for me, being my first ever smartphone as well (except I have the samsung spica).

So i've had this phone now for coming up to a couple of weeks now thoroughly enjoying the new features it has but there are so many things that have ruined it for me if anyone can help me out with any of my questions would really appreciate it!

1) I download htc sync but it doesn't find the mobile ( i have done this on both the laptop and desktop to no avail) i have used the tips on their site making sure the anti-virus software isn't on etc but still nothing. really would like to get this sorted so i can root it.

2) battery life I'm guessing if i am able to root it i'll be able to adjust the settings and delete certain items? I've already sorted out the syncing of facebook emails etc but it still doesn't last that long a day if i'm lucky has anyone got any other tips?

3) Got my sister one and for some reason when ever she answers her phone it instantly goes to loud speaker i cant work out how to get it back to normal and don't know whether its a setting or just the phone.. (it didn't happen for the first week)

4) And finally again on my sisters phone the phone lags and when i try to use advanced task killer pro it takes about 30 seconds to get into it and then it needs a force close so no apps can be killed anymore. So i uninstalled it and downloaded and installed it again with the same problem.. Because of this and the above fault could it be a dodgy handset?

If anyone can answer any of these questions would be really grateful

thanks

Leon

Here goes...

This fixed HTC Sense for me:

- Reinstall Locations app
- Remove and re-added your HTC Sense sync account (same user details)
- Sync all
- Untick Phone Finder in Locations and sync all
- Tick the above and sync all again

2) battery life I'm guessing if i am able to root it i'll be able to adjust the settings and delete certain items? I've already sorted out the syncing of facebook emails etc but it still doesn't last that long a day if i'm lucky has anyone got any other tips?

You don't need root access to improve battery life. Here's a few tips:

- Set screen brightness to auto
- Reduce sync times (four hours for Facebook etc)
- Disable Bluetooth, GPS etc when not needed (obvious)
- The biggest one: disable 3G/wifi when not needed

I've only done those and I easily get 2 full days if I don't have 3G on during work hours.

3) Got my sister one and for some reason when ever she answers her phone it instantly goes to loud speaker i cant work out how to get it back to normal and don't know whether its a setting or just the phone.. (it didn't happen for the first week)

No idea, sorry! Try turning "Flip for speaker" off and see if that has any effect.

4) And finally again on my sisters phone the phone lags and when i try to use advanced task killer pro it takes about 30 seconds to get into it and then it needs a force close so no apps can be killed anymore. Do NOT use any kind of task killer app. They cause more problems than they solve and drain battery life (remove any task killer app from your phone too). Let Android manage the background processes. As for the lag, try turning USB debugging on (Applications -> Development -> USB Debugging). It's a known issue with the latest OTA update.

PS. I assume you both have all the updates? To check go to About phone -> System software updates.

I did that to solve the issue I had above and I can vouch that it definitely improves performance.

Okay , I have moved over to this from a Nokia and generally things are cool.

However, I have noticed there seems to be a lack of a PC to phone text software, much like Nokia Messenger. If I plug my Nokia in, the software will come up and allow me to manage and create texts via the computer.

Any ideas about a replacement?

No ideas from me - try asking in the Android apps thread instead. An alternative that I use at work is Wifi Keyboard - just allows you to type on your PC and the text comes up on your phone.

Hehe, plug it in? No need:

Lets you send texts and browse your phone over wifi in your browser without installing any software :) More info about in my post from the essential thread here.

Hi guys,

My nice year old LG phone is dying a slow death and I was considering getting a smartphone, preferably (probably only due to ignorance) HTC or iPhone.
I was leaning toward HTC Desire HD (mainly due to price) but it seems heavily entwined with Facebook and outlook email and I use neither although I have been considering returning to email software.
So, considering these points, would I be wasting half the phone?

edit: oh and, is the HTC Desire HD the latest HTC?

And, would it be a bad idea to commit to a 24month contract for this or an iPhone? Along time ago some networks offered mid-term upgrades but those days seem to be over :(

Oh I see, just shows how much I know about phones. So does hd7 and mozart have its own app-line/store, I'm guessing the windows phones couldn't use android apps? Can android apps be developed on a windows pc?

I'm sure you could turn off the facebook and email stuff but I was mainly worried that seeing as they're so heavily entwined with the Desire HD's functionality I'd be wasting it, if you know what I mean. Perhaps I'd do better getting a lower budget smartphone on a shorter contract.

The DHD certainly isn't entwined with Facebook any more than any other smartphone. And it can be turned off either way. Outlook? Where did you get that idea from? It's Android, not WinMo :p. If anything it's linked to Gmail and your Google Account but you can use any email provider you want.

What do you need from your phone? You might want to take a look at the Orange San Francisco if you're budget and contract length conscious.

Posted from my DHD on the train ;).
