So most of you will know I drive an old rust bucket ROVER Mini Cooper. :p

Seriously thinking of setting up an advert on pistonheads for it tomorrow and see what happens. ;)

Trouble is I want a car that is at least a little bit unique with a lot character but what kind of choices can Motors provide for someone who is 19 with no ncb (driving since 17 though) and hasn't had a policy of my own yet - which is another factor as I will probably add my parents as named drivers for those just in case moments.

Been looking at the usual things but haven't checked insurance quotes yet.

So to sum up:

Age: 19
NCB: None unless 1 year as a named driver might count(?)
Work/Mileage: Contractor at the moment so this is tough also, I don't do a lot of miles for work (at the moment) or social, maybe 6000 miles a year or even less.
Budget: Well, the less the better as it means I will have more funds left over for a rainy day fund for the car just in case. I'm going to say £6000 for now.

Cheers guys. :D

:)

You been fronting then?

Nope. I am the main driver at the moment. I am not the policy holder nor am I the registered owner. What I am saying is if I get a policy in my own name is it recommended to add on parents etc even if just for emergencies.

What I am looking for is a car that is better for motorway use/general use etc. While I love the Mini and everything about it, it still has its foibles... :(

I realise insurance isn't going to be £400 like it is for most on here. I suppose budget for insurance is £1000-£2000 depending on cost of the car in the first place.

4k doesnt really make that a bargain.

id just get something cheap and reliable at that age which you can insure reasonably and still have buckets of fun with. mk5 fez ZS springs to mind. id still love one to this day.

then get something half decent at 21.

Turn 20 next june if that makes any difference at all.

Never been a big fan on a the fiesta's but look great value for money, is a focus to much? :)

Just get a MK1.5 Focus 1.6 Zetec.

Great car for someone your age.

Just so I don't hurt feelings, I'm sure it's a great car but I may as well just keep the mini if downgrading was an option.

I suppose I just want a good all rounder, though not something slower than the Mini but I do want something larger.

Huh? :p

You been smoking? ;)

I honestly would not be even thinking about it but it's getting to a point where motorways actually get intimidating. Top speed of the mini is 90 which is not a problem. Even the fact it has only 4 gears I love but it's not getting pratical. The seat is as far back as possible and even then my clutch leg touches the wheel when changing...don't get me started on braking!

Have a look on piston heads at how much minis go for. Mine is highest spec 1997 with just shy of 25k miles - ergo I can probably get £6999 for it. ;)

So sell the Mini and buy a £2000 Focus and save the rest for something better when your insurance drops.

The Focus is far superior to the Mini.

Fonzee our minds are one.

Is a newer model focus really out of reach, baring in mind i would like to keep the car a fair few years.

This seems quite the bargain though insurance is going to be...

I'm thinking image wise for a young driver. The MK1 beats the MK2 hands down. Unless you are going for an ST of course. Which at your age, you won't be. ;)

Not just image though. The MK1 is a great handling car for what it is. The MK2 is a bit too lardy imo.

I love it. But it's definatley marmite. Just wish more cars were that adventurous. The MK2 is boring as hell in comparison.

It's not just that, it doesn't even have an arm rest and would be a big step down in my opinion.
