Bioshock 2

Not really, no.

Repetitive gameplay, uninspiring story. It's much more combat focused but combat is only slightly less clunky than Bioshock 1 so it doesn't pay off too well. By the end it becomes routine.

[EDIT] Oh, it's a better experience on the 360 in comparison to the PC though. The PC version is plagued by annoying bugs such as the fact that it loses your key bindings EVERY time you restart the game and some controls are displayed incorrectly during the tutorial sections at the start which also caused some frustration.

does it compare favourably against the first one?

No, it really doesn't. As a game it's hardly bad, gameplay is slightly improved however the whole "play as a Big Daddy" thing is purely cosmetic, the little sisters mechanic gets boring very quickly and the story is absurd, not to mention the introduction of the worst and most annoying main antagonist in gaming history, it's not a patch on the first game.

Well im quite enjoying it, the artwork and atmosphere in the game is still second to none, and i love the scavenging, and the whole vibe is still quite disturbing, one thing i will gripe about is the never ending rush of splicers, when the little sister is harvesting the Adam, i reall hate moments like that in games:(

I'm a huge fan of the first game and I think the 2nd one is decent. The Plasma/weapons are way better to use and some other minor gameplay stuff have improved.

Graphics are a bit meh some places but not really a big deal. It's still nice looking Rapture :)

I like the wave of splicers as you then can plan out all traps and things :D Was the best bit about playing both of them on hard. You had to actually use the different abilities.

Gameplay wise everything should be better. More balanced, using plasmids and weapons.. but some how it just doesn't feel right.

Not at patch on the first, but still worth a fiver or so on xbox if you find it second hand.

The atmosphere was somewhat missing, but it's still definitely worth playing, still one of the best games on the xbox even if it doesn't lve up to the original. What is good is the Minervas Den DLC. That's an extra chapter which is how the game should have been in the first place!

I really quite enjoyed it, and I loved using weapons and Plasmids at the same time, but the story wasn't a patch on the first game which is what sets them apart for me. Bioshock had a fantastic storyline, while the sequel was passable at best. Still worth playing though, especially if it can be picked up cheaply.

If BS2 was the first game it would be awesome, I liked the gameplay a bit more but the 1st game was special and after that BS2 feels like a patched add-on

Strange games for me...

The first, took me AGES to get past 3 hours play time, wasn't interested at all. One day (and I am talking about at least a year after it was out) I picked it up and just couldn't put it down! Loved it, would love to play it all over again if I am honest!

2nd was alright, nothing special, little touches were no longer there which just took away the feel that the first gave...

Bugger it, I am going to play the first tonight lol.

In hindsight Bioshock 2 was vastly inferior to the original game, I guess that's not that surprising given it was developed by a different team to the first game COD stylee.

Gameplay wasn't bad and the dual weapons/plasmids was a nice addition but story line wise it was all to meh for my liking

Infinite should revive the series being made by the original team, looking forward to that immensely :)

I too am far more interested in Infinite than i was Bioshock 2. It's becoming a worrying trend for big blockbuster games to get a dual development team setup. The sooner developers realize it will likely damage the IP in the long run the better.

I've just started the first one. It's...OK but not great IMO. Though I'm early on in the game.

The gameplay is repetitive, the shooting mechanics are like a wet noodle and the plot is a little... sketchy at times. But the atmosphere is second to none and there are one or two truly sublime moments. It's worth sticking with tbh, I say that as one of the people who likes it a lot less than the majority do.
