Have students actually got anything to complain about?

Can't say that I've been following the mass hissyfit too closely, but from what I can tell it's fairly black and white...

I work full time (above minimum wage), and I have relatively minimal bills.

And yet most students seem to be able to spend money on...

- Clothes I can't afford.
- More nights on the lash than I can afford.
- Laptops/PC equipment I can't afford.
- Consoles I can't afford.
- Games/DVD's/CD's I can't afford.

Etc etc etc...

Now it seems they may have to spend their money on an education, rather than luxury items. Hence the OMG THIS IS SO UNFAIR!

Yes I'm sure I'm somehow misguided. But that's how it seems from my perspective.

Well to a point yes I am. But really, there was a thread on here recently where some guy was asking what crap he could spend the last of his his loan on. So it's not entirely an exaggeration.

Don't forget most students don't have the liquid money to do this and are just wracking up debt on credit cards etc.

I'm all for working part time as a student, but these days the £2K or so you'd earn in a part time job barely puts a dent in your total debt. In my day it pretty much paid for my accomodation and the loan covered luxuries, hence not taking one out every year. Now, I gather the loan pretty much covers tuition fees and a little bit.

Well that's my point. Now they have to get into debt for their education, rather than getting into debt for gucci/xbox.


But like I said, I know very little about this issue. Just saying how it's coming accross to me. :p
 
i was actually talking to a friend last night about what you have said seek and i really want to know how they can have what they have with such low income's.

i was going to start a thread about the subject but you done it before i could so well done seek :)
 
It won't be getting in debt for tuition instead of for buying random crap as the tuition is all paid off after uni...so they'll be financially ruining themselves maxing out overdrafts and credit cards and then also have the increased tuition fees to pay after they start earning £21k.

Won't stop people having the attitude of 'there's money in my account so I must spend it on all the things I want now instead of saving it' though.
 
They don't really have much to complain about at all to be honest.

I would hazard a guess at around 90% of those protesters as being sheep who are clubbing along just for the grin because everyone else is doing it. It was the same when I was at uni; "oh come on, lets boycott Nestle in the student shop because they're an evil corporation!" So they all did then a day later they all forgot about it and couldn't really care less. The same applied to voting in the lib dems, because it was "fighting the power" or something or other, when really I don't think most of them had a clue what they were really voting for and as soon as they enter the real world of trying to make a living I think their outlook would be much different.

Just get your study done and go away kids, nobody really cares :p
 
Of course they have nothing really serious to complain about. There are people in this country living in conditions of poverty, abuse, destitution and hopelessness that are far worse off and need the taxpayers funding far more than students.

Will they have debt? Yes, but the amount depends on how they conduct their finances to begin with and their earning potential enables them to repay those debts and live in relative comfort.

As with most things, each group feel they are the ones most deserving or most hard done by, but Students really are not in a position to complain.
 
Student Loans are interest free and only paid off on the basis you earn a decent salary.

They've even increased the earning threshold and will track it based on inflation too.

So it's not real debt you will have a bailiff knocking on your door for - you pay it off slowly - when you can afford to.

Maybe students will think more about studying for something they love and want to do as a career rather than just the experience and free money (student loans).
 
Loads of people struggle with money at uni, usually the people who's parents earn enough to not get receive grants but not enough to fund them through it.

No they have not, the universty system is broken, it needs fixing, a lot of people doing pointless waste of time degrees are now going to have to get proper jobs instead.

Boo Hoo, life sucks, shut up, grow up and deal with it.

The problem is that it was too cheap to begin with. University prices in other countries such as America and Canada are much higher. I doubt the majority of people would want to pay a lot more tax just so that people can go to university.

Unfortunately in life things cost money and it is impossible for everybody to be able to afford them.
 
One of the student leaders (steward for the march apparently) was on bbc earlier arguing with Michael Portilo.

He refused to condem the vandalism and violence committed by the students and instead wanted to deflect it to what the gov is doing with their austerity measures.... why is it students think the financial crisis shouldnt affect their cosy little world? Everyone suffers... students included thats life.

He came across as a bit of an arrogant ****** tbh.

Nothing a short sharp poke in the eye and a dose of "you aint getting your own way welcome to the real world" wont sort out for him.

10 years time he will look back on that footage and cringe.

Having representatives like that really doesn't help their argument at all.
