New car on the horizon - maybe?

Triumph Dolomite with Stag alloys, very tidy :)

Close! They're Sprint alloys (the Sprint being the first British production car to come with standard alloys, as well as the world's first production car with a mass-produced 16 valve four cylinder engine), Stag alloys are a different PCD - 'Big Triumph' of 4.5" as opposed to 'Little Triumph' 3.75".

Very similar design though!

You can fit Stag alloys on them, but requires Stag hubs too. Ends up looking like:

What I am saying is if I get a policy in my own name is it recommended to add on parents etc even if just for emergencies.

Not necessarily, both my parents have held a license for over 20+ years, neither have any claims or convictions within the last 5 years, and both of them would have massively increased my premium.

Hmm I shall check again tomorrow but so far it's looking like changing insurance to admiral, earn ncb till 21, save more wonga then get a beast of a car. Something V8. :D

With admiral see if you can get your parents on a multicar policy. I am 18 year old male 1 year no claims no points or crashes good postcode and I have a bmw 323CI coupe e46 fully comp with a £500 excess for £1300. This is with me as the main driver and my parents as named drivers. I ran some quotes before and they were around 4k so just shows you if you shop about you can save a decent ammount of money.

So begs the question, do I go for a more premium car like a e46 or a Mazda baring in mind they go for the same amount. Love e46 styling and sure it would make a great car, but what about running costs?

I don't do a lot of miles in the grand scheme of things so it's like it wont have 40k more on the clock after a year. :)

Running costs on the 323 are the same if you had a 328. So if your going to get a bmw get a 328+ because the insurance is another £50 for me so I wish I did that. Everything will be more expensive than the mini. Make sure you check the cooling system are they are the week point on these cars. They are really nice to drive and have plenty of power and sound nice aswell! I wouldn't bother with the 4 pot bmw as you will always wish you had gone for a straight 6! The 316/318 are underpowered for the size of the car. I am sure some other people on here will have some more info. Fox is a good person to ask!

Given your low annual mileage I have thought a MX5 would be a better bet than the E46, but really they are completely different cars for completely different markets.

That's what I am getting at, I want a car which I can drive as my daily. I started a new job 2 months with a bank and end result is my journey to work is only a 12 mile round trip and a short walk. So I do want something that I can just turn key and go to work on a morning and get me home again. Earlier this year I was doing 60-70 miles a day for work and only 3 months ago I was doing 300 miles a week for work in the mini. For total mileage each year I probably do less then anyone on here as circumstances change frequently and I do only do infrequent long hauls down the motorway for social reasons but it would be nice to have a car that was more motorway friendly, ie less wind/road noise, something that is actually safe at motorway speeds etc. ;)

Listen now im sober, sell the Mini bank the money, buy a 1500 quid Mondeo for the motorway, in 2 years add what you banked to what you save in the meantime and get a belter of some description.

As for them stag alloys i was hammered last night, im amazed i was that close :D

Haha, see when I come on here on a week day. By 6pm your already past the point of no return. :p

Your right, I know your right but for say, £2000 is it really worth getting a mondeo. No doubt its decent to drive but has it got that spark, that raw feel good feeling. I just think that 2 years in that will just drag.

Now my job has changed I am not even using the motorway to get to work. Just an A road, however it still takes me the same time it used to drive 60 miles a day. Honestly, I am driving into centre of leeds now to a car park and it easily takes me an hour just to get home in rush hour traffic. The difference money wise is paying £10 a day with petrol when doing the 60 miles, and paying £12 or so quid a week petrol to get to work though I am paying £4.50 parking so its all relative.

I am being a bit clueless. It's just when its -0c lately, and the heater in my car is near enough hopeless and seems to be awful de-misting the front window let alone the side windows. And the cheek of some people when I park dead straight in a space and there is about a good foot and half between my car and the line yet people still choose to open their doors and be clumsy.

I quite like driving it on the motorway over taking people in huge bmws as they just look and wonder why. Rev wise its actually good because the gear ratios are like in a muscle car, low revs, decent power. Going by the speedo sitting steady at 70 on a motorway is 3000rpm. ;)

The price of Minis just keeps going up year by year even more so if you keep it nice there really isn't any depreciation (which laughs as my car is actually worth twice that of fox's 530i) so I think getting my own policy - which I should as its cheaper than what I am paying now and its even my own name, waiting till around 21 and then selling it and put funds on a Jag XK or something which is a beast. :D

EDIT:

There is something about a black vinyl roof thats just awesome IMO. :p

Isn't a Mondeo that a bit extreme for someone who does only 6k a year?

I only did 6k a year in my Mondeo. It was awesome. The price they cost makes anything smaller pointless. Why buy a Focus will it will be an older generation car, be less well specified, likely have an inferior engine, probably be older and cost more? Not as nice inside, either.

Yes, but he was after something "unique" and has "character". He's also young, doesn't seem to want or need much practicality and does nearly no mileage. Seems the perfect brief for something pretty much the polar opposite of a Mondeo.

Then you go the whole hog buy a Maserati put 150 quid a week petrol in and 3k to insure it like my daft son.

Or you do the sensible thing till you get some no claims and more money in the hod.

He's young, has a crash against his name and hardly any NCB. Anything unique, fun or similiar is either going to be not worth it or cost half his money to insure.

I'm +1 for the buy something decent but cheap for a few years and then walk into something epic.

That is what I think as well. I have no need for a four seater nor specifically a hatch back. Money wise, I don't need any more in my bank account for the moment so it does seem a bit silly to sell the mini now (which could take a while anyway) and get a mondeo and pay potentially more insurance.

What people don't realise is the Mini is a category of its own really, insurance companies class it as a Saloon, despite the fact its 2 door and more of a coupe than a Saloon but there you go. There also see the value of the car if written off as being lower than what you should sell it for - as if it is falling the pieces. In reality every time my Mini flies through MOT. :)

Have you read the thread?

I'm not some unemployed uni student. I have an income and savings, as well as around half the value of the mini should I sell it. :)

Currently don't have any commitments apart from getting to work, paying my way a bit as I still live with my parents.

If i was you this would be my game plan.

1 Mint up the Mini for sale, ask the big money and wait.

2 Buy Mondeo while Mini is for sale, forget its got 4 doors and 4 seats it also drives better than anything else for that money.

3 Turn 21 buy what you like.

I still think a cheap MK2 MX5 is the way to go.

They're reliable, relativity cheap to run, not actually too terrible on the odd motorway but will be tons more fun on back roads than a Mondeo. Best of both worlds providing he can keep the insurance costs down.
