Audi A7 - complete with night vision..!

On a wider topic - safety technology in cars - one of my jobs next year is to look into vehicle telematics systems & their impact on motor insurance.

It's my view that within the next 10 years all new cars will come with telematic systems as standard - the insurance industry is pushing for them - they've proven themselves as an effective risk management tool primarily for commercial vehicle fleets over the last few years.

These systems are pretty simple - "black box" - records all kinds of positional data in terms of the vehicle itself, steering angle, brake pressure, lights etc but also incorporates a g meter too - helpful for proving you hit someone up the arse end 2 mph and not the 20 mph they claim. Impacts over a certain g and the system would auto dial 999 etc.

What's people's views on having a black box in their cars that records data on a stream but then saves the last 30 seconds or so before an impact?

I'll stick with my bike thanks, no one is going to watch over me and enforce speed limits (not that I'd ever break any...).

You just know they'll have an uplink and be able to tell where you are, when you were there and how fast you were going

all this money spent on protecting pedestrians how about teaching people not to step out in front of cars?

Err I think that's already done? I'm pretty sure my parents told me that when I was about three.

And then there's TV adverts etc. It's a two-pronged attack and not a bad thing imo.

same to me. However these days kids just walk out in front of cars, cross roads behind and in front of buses, there's a general lack of "fear" in pedestrians because its always the motorists fault.

I guess if cars were louder and more scary people wouldn't think about crossing in front of you.

Yes the noise thing is a serious point isn't it. Some cars are so so quiet. With electric cars potentially attracting a £2k subsidy from the government in the near future, gonna be a whole lot more people stepping out in front of cars!

Good job we're considering noise generators then. The first US customer recieved their Nissan Leaf last weekend. I believe there system makes noise below 15mph and then goes silent once you exceed 18mph and tyre noise is present.

Its up to £5k aswell (up to 25% of value) in terms of grants with 9 cars already on the list.

Camera is mounted in the interior rear view mirror, certainly in the case of the S-Class. That'd have to be one hell of a smash :p
Not on the A7,
"With the optional Night Vision assistant, an integral thermal imaging camera, discretely mounted in the front grill". :)

I don't think I want this on my car, from the video on the audi website it appears to have some kind of "pedestrian magnet" built into it.

Don't have an issue. I'f I've ****ed up then I'll hold my hands up. If I've tapped someone and they're claiming whiplash it'll be very handy.

What's peoples reasons for not wanting it? And no "big brother" excuses, it's only used in the event of an accident like said.

Even if you could end up in jail for 'dangerous driving' after a moments mistake or getting carried away?

That happens every day currently, officers examining crash sites/skids marks. If I did something to deserve a jail sentence for dangerous driving it would have to be pretty shocking and would probably be provable without the data but the data would just back it up. So yeah, why not. :)

I think it's probably the only way to go forward. The idea of constantly monitoring driving is undesirable though.

If it results in an accident then yes, you do the crime, you do the time. It might not be pleasant but it's the way the world works. A simple mistake could end a life.

If this form of monitoring improves the standard of driving (which it probably won't!) and also covers my behind in the case of an accident that I have not caused, then I guess I have no choice but to support it as long as it's fairly implemented.

The main question being is will the insurance cos push it via carrot or stick?

Install a black box - pay half current premiums - worth considering.

Install a black box or pay double current premiums - umm..

They will likely down group new cars with them fitted.

So, Honda Accord MY 2018 group 09, Honda Accord MY 2008 group 11.
