Hi,

I'm a big Beat 'Em Up fan, when I bother to put the practice in I'm pretty good playing with a pad I can hold my own online. I have played a few a few stick players though and some of them are deadly, I would buy one but I can't really wrap my head around being good with an arcade stick. I remember playing beat 'em ups in arcades in my younger days and almost remembered it being awkward, definitely preferred a pad.

I know the transition from pad to stick will vary from person to person so I'm not going to ask how difficult it is, is the transition worth it though? Would you see pretty good leaps in your game I mean? If anybody can let me know I'd appreciate it, cheers fellas.

Edit:

I'm on PS3, if I were to buy a stick my limit would be £200.

I think it depends on where you learned your craft ;)

I'm old skool so I was raised on a diet of Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat in the arcades back in the days when consoles were light years behind arcade machines. As such I find a stick better for beat em ups even though I rarely use one at home.

First of all what console are you playing on, as far as I am aware xbox 360 pad is terrible for fighting games but ps3 not so bad.

All best players play using arcade sticks, you can get a very good quality arcade stick for about £100.

I personally can't play fighting games using a pad, it just doesn't work when you need 6 buttons and some complex movement to do in short period of time.

Sorry, I'm on PS3 (edited my original post to reflect that).

Plenty of decent pad players nowadays.

Learning a stick will basically be a month of re-learning what you already know, so I'd recommend you see if you can borrow someone's stick first, or buy something like a second hand Hori EX2 to make sure you actually want to do it.

If you're looking to dive right in, go for a TE.

it is tough and often frustrating, the simplest of moves suddenly become the hardest.
if you dont think your ready for the plunge why not invest in a madcatz sf pad? you can pick them up for £15 nowadays ...

You lucky, PS3 stick seems to be cheap than XP ones. You can get a Round 2 stick for £80 most of the time.
Like Zid said if you can get one to borrow, like I did off him, and give it a few weeks of getting used to, you'll never want to go back to a pad.

I just bought a street fighter one for Xbox (standard one not the expensive one) for about £40. Only used it a couple of times on SSFIV but it seems good. I couldnt pull off any moves at 1st but then it gets easier. I think once i use it more i'll be a lot better than i was with a pad.

i also remember street fighter II being easier on the snes with a pad than in the arcade with a stick as a kid.

If your limit is that high, get one of those TE SFIV sticks. I've got one and love it.

2 years and counting and still better with a pad though :p

Don't get the Super TES stick, they're crap. Make sure it's a round 1 or 2 TE, and don;t spend a penny over £75.

my advices use whatever you feel most comfortable. using a stick wont make you better if you dont practice. the end of the day, getting good at fighting games is all about practice and playing the game religiously (isnt it the same with all things).

use whatever you feel comfortable with. keep in mind though if you do want to use a stick it will take a considerable amount of time before you feel fully comfortable with it.

I started playing fighting games when vanilla sf4 came out and within 2 months switched to stick. havent looked back since but I still wish my execution was better lol.

Just brought this for playing Mame games on Pc, but you can buy adapters for all other consoles, you cannot really get any better than orginal arcade stick and buttons and its big and heavy so it sits solid on a desk. now £115.00, nornal stick is £99.00

I don't care about the looks at all. Ergonomics are far more important.

The x arcades are bad sticks FYI, I'd actively avoid them.

Really they are true arcade parts with arcade layout, then again you may never have played on an arcade machine. You have bad experience with one of them????

Dude, look at the size of the thing! - It's huge! :p

Yup exactly sits on a glass desk and gets a hammering doesn't move an inch, sit on chair put it on youre legs pure arcade bliss

Each to there own i would rather play arcade games with the authentic feel, just like when i was a kid and played them in the arcades at Blackpool. One pictured was single player the 2 player ones are really huge as in about 3 foot long or so lol.

Kreeeee how can the x-arcade stick be no good when its almost the same as all those modded ones in youre link, arcade parts in an enclosed box. Its only the box and decals that are different, if i took the conponents out and made my own enclosures would it be any better??????
