Stopped for speeding

What a tool. Pretty much sounds like he was lying to make you feel better (i.e. happens to everyone) that he was giving you a ticket for such a petty speed or he was telling the truth and is infact just getting revenge on everyone else who goes 1mph over the speed. Definite jobsworth though, should have pushed him over then teabagged him, at least then it would justify a fine and some points.

Certainly an interesting take on things.

I hate the way the guidelines are interpreted differently by every officer, for example I was making progress down a local A road and just got a slap on the wrist. According to the copper, I was 9mph over the limit, which is quite conservative!

Got 2 options, 3 points and a fine, or I quote 'the rollocking of my life'.

He was true to his word!

No because it would have been around 37 indicated, yes it's unlucky but I refuse to accept that you have to constantly stare at your speedo to keep a constant speed.

I really struggled to keep my dads Lexus GS430 at 30 mph while going downhill towards a speed camera van at the bottom, foot on the brakes the whole way and watching the speedo, being an auto I didn't have the option to change down a gear either, the damn thing wanted to roll down it at 40+.

I imagine in a Fiesta or something you can feel 30 mph, in anything bigger 30 mph feels like your not moving. :p

I once test rode a Yamaha FZ1000 genesis motor bike.
That thing was unusable below 35mph, unless you rev it mad in 1st gear !
If I had brought I would had either lost my license or more likely my life ! !

My car can roll up hills at 40 :D

Trust me, the lack of registration on the ticket is mot enough to get out of it.
They can have no registration, wrong registration, wrong date and it will just be corrected once it goes to court.

Guidelines are indeed 10% +2 but as said it is only a guideline.

I guess there has to be a cut-off point and the OP speedo will either have been reading perfect at 35mph or showing 37.

Stick it in 2 or 3? There's always a manual override.

The Copper was a solid bloke

I know it's been mentioned earlier but how on earth can you think this!? He gave you a ticket for doing a whole 4MPH over the limit. I don't understand how you can think of him as anything short of a ****** for slapping you with points for an offence that the majority of human beings would have probably ignored or at the very least gave a "Slow it down a touch and have a nice Christmas" warning.

If he had gone the whole hog and done you for dangerous driving as well and had your license off of you, would you have thought him to be "Tough but fair"? :p

Genuine question, as I know you drive for a living, but how many cars have you experienced with an UNDER reading speedo?

Quite a few actually, I had an old XR3i back in the day, was pulled on the M5 for speeding (before the days of GATSO's when you actually saw Police on the roads!) and the copper said I was doing 89MPH I swore blind that I was doing an indicated 80 (thinking honesty was the pest policy) so he followed me for a few miles and speed checked me.

I kept it bang on 70 yet when we stopped again he said I was doing 82MPH!!!

I was extremely lucky, he was obviously getting plenty at home as he let me off!

Turned out my car had the wrong clocks fitted to it hence the wild reading.

I often notice cars with digital dash displays passing me, or me passing them, often their speedo reads less than my calibrated tachograph!

Sure over reading is FAR more common, but never discount the fact it could well be under reading, and by quite a margin!

Well, technically they can do you for 31mph, though i think 34 is harsh as i'd say 99% of drivers around here do about that in a 30. As for speedos, at that speed 34 indicated is 34 for me if SAT nav is to be believed, up to 80ish my speedo stays within a 2-3mph max variance. I suppose this is why it looks like i'm overtaking people at speed cameras :D

I wouldn't take that, and look into the legal side of things reguarding the reg number not being recorded.

I thought it was always 10% margin, ie;
30 camera, 33...50 camera, 55 and so on.

Can anyone confirm this?

Depending on who you ask, it's 10%+1mph, 10%+2mph, or 10%+3mph. But regardless of which one it actually is, it's merely a guideline and coppers can write tickets for doing 30.0001mph in a 30.

I believe ACPO guideline is 10%+ 2, but by law anything over the limit is speeding. I've asked a camera operator (police) what speed they were tugging people at and he told me 39+ today in a 30 but thats just them and it can vary wildly but usually SCAMera partnership vans etc.. give a lot less leeway than police operated handhelds, usually ACPO guideline at least though.

Some cars I've had would be easy to keep at a constant 30 others not so. It's not so much constant staring to keep the speed constant more constant checking to make sure.

They should just come up with a 30/50/70mph button you can hit like a pitlane speed limiter so you would never have to take your eyes off the road for a second while baby dodging ;)

Quite a few cars these days do have this. The cruise setting has two options, one the normal cruise, the 2nd a limiter.

As it is actually illegal to produce a car with an under reading speedo I doubt there are a significant number out there.
