pc or not to pc

The point I am trying to make is that no the pc is not the #1 gaming platform anymore it's probably ps3/360/pc/wii

I'd rather have a ps3/360 + basic pc than a gaming rig and no console because the games are more fun on console especially all the sports racing and fighting games not to mention stuff like bayonetta and demons souls the two best games of the last 2 years.

The pc doesn't get exclusives often enough to warrant having an always up to date latest greatest gaming pc.
The fact you are dragging up mmo's in to the argument speaks volumes, since when did you need a latest gaming rig for mmo's ?

People who don't have a 360 or ps3 are missing out you cant judge consoles on first person shooters everyone knows pc is better for those.

I agree, I love my PC but the exclusives are just becoming thinner and thinner. All the biggest releases these days are ports from a console. F1 & COD Black Ops as perfect examples, and its even becomming less that a PC title is better than its console counterpart, such as Grid.. As developers care less and less for the PC, its 'gamer' userbase will slowly diminish.. I have them all, two gaming pc's, 3x PS3 a 360 and a Wii . Yes the PC has some advantages over the consoles, but the cost of ownership is not as once needed when all we are getting is crappy ports these days... It's going to start hurting the industry soon... OcUK even needs to watch out ! The market place will not be the same in 5yrs time. I myself who loves to upgrade is now thinking, hmmm why bother, there's nothing out there I want to invest that sort of money on.. Actually i think i'd rather just buy another 360 for the front room.

i think you fail to understand the word 'subjective'. in fact you seem to fail in general. i own a ps3, and a gaming rig. and i am far, far more more excited about pc exclusives in 2011 than i am console exclusives. currently i am having more fun playing sc2 on pc than i think i have ever had on a ps3 game ever. so am i just an anomaly to your massive, baseless and sweeping generalisation or what? are the rest of the good contributors to this forum just anomalies as well?

If you drop it down to 12 months, it works easily enough.

£200 5850 at launch, sell for £100 now, buy a 6950, and make up the difference by buying 12 games each £10 cheaper than their console counterparts.

That's buying 1 game a month. Simples.

Sure, consoles have some nice exclusives, but not nice enough to justify me shelling out over £150+ for them as I need the consoles in question.

Hmmm you need that missus of yours to buy you a calculator for Christmas ..:D PC's are simply more expensive.. Cost of ownership is far more than a console. For starters, you can no longer sell a PC game as you can a console game.. Actually I played Fifa10 for a good 10 months which I bought for $50 and sold it on the bay for $40.... Go figure.. Try doing that with a Steam key. I sold my PHAT on the bay for a little less than what I bought my slim for.. The argument of trading your card, doesn't hold water I'm afraid. Gaming PC's is an expensive luxury, that gamers will unfortunately start finding it harder and harder to justify.. The developers need to make launch titles work on launch day and make them run 'BETTER' than their console counterpart if the PC it to remain at the top of the gaming food chain !

well feel free to list the amazing list of pc exclusives next year ?

The witcher II is all I can think of

Diablo 3
Shogun 2
Red Orchestra 2
+ several 'less notorious' franchises such as Dungeons (Dungeon Keeper) and Torchlight 2 etc.

and again, as I previously stated, the range of next gen MMOs that will indeed require a higher end computer to play. SW:TOR, Guild Wars 2, WH40k, Tera etc. - although you seem to think these dont count, for reasons beyond me.

Whilst that's only a few non-MMO games (not counting the plethora of Indie games), if you can find me a console game that has had as much work go into it as Diablo 3, can produce the complexity and depth of gameplay, as well as the shear number of units on screen as Shogun 2, or is as in depth a WW2 shooter as RO2, all of which have had previous games in each series that have been built upon for years and hailed as the best of genre by many, then I will be very surprised.

However, you'll likely poo poo these in favor of your awesome beat em up games which have all the depth of a yogurt pot, and the complexity of...well button mashing. The last few MK games recieved scores on metacritic ranging from 70-76. Rather mediocre.

Infact a quick look at the recent PS3 exclusive scores on metacritic reveal, Red Dead at number 1 with 88, GT5 at number 2 with 84 (although a rather average user score of 7.4), and Vanquish at number 3 also with 84. After that there's 3 games that come in at the seventy-somethings, although two of them have a user score of 6.7. And down from that every other PS3 exclusive comes in at low seventies and less.

Thats hardly a great result for this years PS3 exclusives?

I think for a lot of gamers such as myself the love of PC gaming is a combination of the hardware and software element of PC gaming.

That is always the main focus of the argument I get from my console loving mates...."No way would I spend that on a PC to be able to play games...I got my 360 from asda for 130 quid!!!" or something along those lines is what I usually get told.

I remember my first ever gaming experience was a NES circa 1990, but a couple of years later my parents bought me an Amiga 500 for xmas...needless to say the NES was the last console I ever owner (or asked for from Santa :p )

I will admit it is sometimes hard to justify what some of us spend on our pc systems....I went through all the invoices of the components I bought to build my current rig and since February this year I have spent £2600 on my PC (but it will last a while).

If you can honestly say that consoles are better than pc's you obviously have never had a decent enough pc to play games. once you play on a pc you see the light, the better side of life if you would :p. also i'll tell you something that my friend said that made me major lol. we were talking about fable 3, i then said when it comes out on pc it is going to so much better than xbox and you will realise how **** xbox actually is........... he then went off in a blind rage and started talking like he knew it all and said to me that the pc graphics are going to be worse because it is made for xbox and ported over to pc, the only reason it's taking so long to come out is because of piracy and the bugs. he then said that all games are made for consoles and are ported over to pc that's why there worse..... i never lol'd so hard in my entire life

Agreed. Once you play a game on a decent PC, you realise it's so much better.

what i try to tell everyone. i had some kid the other day tell me that a ps3 is better than any xbox and pc put together, he said they have 8 cores thats why, i then replied i sorry holy one i must not challenge you knowledge of computer and console hardware which is obviously not there.

No I would say PC's always were better than consoles.. Though thanks to lack of developer support the other team has caught up, and it won't be long before they overtake and thrust the PC gamer into the niche market. The only persons shelling out lots will be anorak MMO players.. The typical gamer who's into things such as Half-Life and Call of Duty will shift towards consoles as the console versions start to run better from the get go.

I'm still playing COD4 on my PC, for Black Ops, I've decided to get the 360 ver since its not buggy and i just can't be bothered buying a game anymore only to do 3hrs worth of research and days / weeks of patience for the thing to be working as it should.

Not even talking about that I am talking about the game line up for 2011 and beyond.

Nobody is saying a console is better than a pc.I do have a gaming pc and have been there since ms dos games etc.
Sorry but the last guardian & twisted metal alone will be better than anything released on pc next year.

Anyway no need to turn this in to a which is better debate we all know the pc is miles better we are talking about the software.

You are basing everything on :example bad company 2 looks better and has better controls on pc arguments which is besides the point when most of what I would consider the best games of 2010 were not on pc.
Metacritic isn't perfect either.

Stop arguing about the graphics or titles... both platforms have its own good or better stuff. Whoever says either PC or consoles are obsolete obviously has no idea.

Definitely PC is better for FPS or MMO ( which is exclusive ) but can you bring few of your mates home and play some multiplier on a single PC ?? NO.

Can you just put the disc in and enjoy simple and enjoyable games with friendly controls straight away on the PC? NO.
Keep in mind that most people still don't even know how to install a PC game, not to mention the complexity of macros or keybinds or even patching the games or installing mods/addons/fixes.

I will alter my stance if you mean using a PC solely for gaming, then I agree that consoles are a better route to take.

I, however, use my PC for a number of things apart from gaming, making the cost somewhat more justified. A perfectly decent gaming PC can be had for a moderate cost as well, no need for 580s if you stick to 1080p.

You're right. Technologically, high-end PCs outstrip anything in the console world. This doesn't mean that they are better for gaming for the majority of gamers, however.

Unless you're a techy/enthusiast (read somebody on boards such as this ;)), you won't have a high end PC hooked up to your TV and be playing in the lounge. I play games to chill out, often split screen with friends. You can't do this with a PC without bringing it into the living room, and working out a control system for three or four people. It's a hassle. This isn't the way that everybody games, but the less "techy" and more casual the gamer, the less likely they will be to want to sit at their desk to play.

Likewise, a game does not need to be insanely deep to be good. Hardcore PC gamers will disagree but again, I play games to relax. I don't want to spend a half hour pondering whether levelling up in a certain way will impact upon my desire to be a morally good warrior-mage with scanty clothing and a slight paunch. Again, I imagine that this is how the majority of gamers play games, and this reflects in sales of more casual console games. It does not mean that the game is worse if it is not as deep. Uncharted is a shallow game, but what it does it does exceptionally. Bioshock is a shallow game, but with an exceptional storyline which is why it is the great game that it is. Red Dead Redemption ditches a lot of the RPG elements from other Rockstar games which is why it is the game it is.

You may disagree with me. I know that for some people there is nothing more satisfying than considering how to level up, or how to plan their empire on a strategy game and that's fine. For these people games are competitive, and they want to "be the best". Most of these people will game on the PC for the deeper nature of them.

In short, it's a completely subjective question. It depends on what you want to get out of games. However, just because a game is less deep, it neither means that it is worse, and nor does it mean that it's for "thick consolites" who can't see that the PC ROXOR.

tbf this is a very good argument
