12 months in Adelaide

Im confused, you said the baby is due in November, but its December now, so November is 11 months away?
Or am I being dense?

Great pictures and update. I'm hoping to be heading 'home' to Adelaide later next year and any mention of the place makes me want to get back quicker.

Glad your doing ok mate and I hope next year will bring better things.
BUT I bet you miss BRUM :D

Thanks everyone. :)

You're absolutely correct; it was my mistake. This series of posts was originally written and posted on another forum in October. I thought I'd updated all the details, but that one slipped past me. Fixed now.

Oh yeah!

I miss it like an ugly rash on an ex-girlfriend. :p

Therefore I demand pics of baby Thomas!!! :p

My OH has family in Australia, Perth I think, and the hints to move there are getting less subtle.

There was a big recruitment drive for cops there a few years back and a former colleague of mine moved to Perth and now pounds the beat there.

Short of another recruitment drive for cops and nurses, I can't see it happening. In a former life I was an industrial chemist and it isn't a trade that I would go back to or think that Australia would bend over backwards to let in.

You might be surprised. I have an English mate who now lives here; his parents came over a couple of years ago, and one of them is an industrial chemist of some description. She works for BAE.

Honestly Ev, I couldn't go back to doing it. It was soul destroying and having been on the force for nearly 11 years I am rusty beyond repair.

Truth be told I am sick to the back teeth of the UK.

Well, I have no idea what industrial chemistry is like, so I'll take your word for it. Would have thought policing was harder, though?

Sorry to hear that mate. Any particular reason?

I worked for a company that manufarctured paints for domestic and industrial purposes and I worked in the R&D labs and literally got paid to watch paint dry and abuse solvents.

I suppose it is the cost of living rise more than anything. Fuel, power and housing have rocketed and on speaking to the lad who transferred to Perth, he gets less pay than he did as a PC in England but it goes a lot further and housing is cheaper than it is in the UK. I would be interested to hear your take on it.

It is a very expensive country to live in yet remains seemingly quite Victorian.

Ah. Yes, well... I take your point.

How long has he been in Australia, and under what circumstances did he move? The strong Australian dollar makes emigrating from the UK much harder than it was even 4 years ago, since you no longer receive the benefit of a 2.5:1 exchange rate.

Cost of living? Don't be fooled. On the basis of 30+ years in Australia and nearly 6 years in the UK, I can tell you right now that the UK is much cheaper. Nearly everything is more expensive in Australia - electricity, gas, broadband, second hand cars, and particularly groceries.

Meanwhile, our real estate bubble has pushed prices to ridiculous levels. Have you seen Australian interest rates lately? The average mortgage rate in Australia is now ~7%. This is utterly monstrous when compared to the UK, where you can still get an introductory 2.5% or variable at 4.5%

I believe Australia is still affordable for the average British expat, provided that: (a) your trade or profession is in demand, (b) you have a nice big wad of cash to plonk down on a mortgage, and (c) you're prepared to make a few compromises.

At the risk of courting hubris, I'll say that I think Mrs Evangelion and I have done alright for ourselves. But our situation is atypical. If you want to know how other people are coping, click here and start reading. Plenty of food for thought on that forum.

Very interesting and surprising as well I must say. Thank you.

I last worked with Dicka ( don't ask ) in 2006 so it will have been 2007 / 8 when he moved.

He had talked about it for a long time with his other half and I think he had family out there as well.

Just to chime in...my youngest brother and his wife are moving to Adelaide in Jan...so a few more weeks and they will be in Aussie land themselves. My sis in law is a GP so has a 4 yr contract out there...my brother will look for a job out there but his expertise is in the food industry ie Management and operations etc...so dont know if he will find it easy to get a job out there but i suppose he will be living off his wife till he gets himself sorted out with a job.

All i know is that my sis in law will be making some very good money there, well she is a GP so i imagine they get paid pretty well out there.

Both of them are looking forward to their new adventure as my brother has always wanted to get out of this country for some time...with any luck i shall be leaving myself to go back to Canada soon as my house there is now fully built...just need to find a buyer for my house here.
