Tron 2 in 2010?

However, the possible reason for my readily acceptance of the visuals was the fact that the script was so shockingly bad. I'm sat in the cinema watching the film anticipating lines and saying to myself 'please don't say that, please don't say that' only for them to utter some cliche scriptwriting 101 drivel.

So it does rival Avatar then. ;)

I was a little worried when they gave the film to Joseph Kosinski to direct. I only had a quick look but as far as i can see he has only directed commercials. This in itself is not necessarily a bad thing, but its a hell of a big film to give to a first time movie director.

My thoughts on seeing this last night;
Turned out it was in 3D not 2D as I thought, although I'm sure the difference is negligible. Seriously, with the potential this film had to make full use of the technology for the purposes of breathtaking visuals enhanced by 3D, I couldn't help but be hugely underwhelmed.
Couple points already picked up on here.
The soundtrack:
There was way too much of it, in fact to the point that by half way through the film you got the feeling that they were trying to shoehorn it in at any opportunity and it became annoying, 'oh listen more industrial/techno incidental music'...
On an up note, good to see Daft Punk themselves make an appearance, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if they inhabit a world like 'the grid' for real.
The Visuals:
First off 'The Grid', as you would expect the world inside the system was visually striking and certainly a lot more sinister that the original. But to be honest, it all felt a bit samey (yes I understand its a computer system where uniformity and repetition are a given) and it just seemed to lack originality. Perhaps naively I was expecting it to impact me with its visuals much the same way the original did, I don't know.
The already mentioned CGI Flynn, or Clu to give the character his proper name, you just kind of got used too. Ok so it wasn't breathtaking imagery but it certainly wasn't the worst I've seen.

I'd better stop.

Being a child of the 80's and a fan of the original, (I know, it's not actually that good a film) I even had the duvet cover set, my excitement and anticipation for this film were palpable. Was it wrong for me to think that with 28 years to imagine and create a sequel this film was going to be, at least, a work of visual excellence showcasing the possibilities of 3D cinema?

Well for me, it wasn't.

So you like it then willis ;)

Agree 110% nothing more to add. :(

First of all: I do not see 2D v 3D as a legitimate reason to critique a movie. It's a novelty technology in my opinion and clearly designed more as an anti-piracy measure than an impressive film making technique.

Visuals: Truly impressive. Rarely does a film exploit CGI to create a unique, believable landscape where the CGI ceases to become a curious distraction and instead manifests as an encompassing, engrossing world. From luminescent neon towers scraping murky charcoal skies to convoluted super polished gaming grid setpieces, the whole thing felt magical to me. As with Tron, the red (or orange in this case) versus blue works well to identify with crisp certainty the villainous from the righteous (misguided though both sides might be).

Audio: Daft Punk did a great job. As anticipated it's a smorgasbord of synthetic electro music. Reminds me of some kind of supped-up midi playlist The genre is entirely in keeping with the film obviously, but if you don't like this sort of thing your ears will be in for a load of hurt. If you do you'll be delighted by Daft Punk's score (and their amusing cameo). In particular one scene is very musically exciting.

Plot: It's not great. In fact you could say it's poor. But really, what would anyone expect from Tron 2? The first was hardly shakespeare. I didn't go into the film expecting much and wasn't surprised either way.

Cast: Sheridan and the Dude are the only actors I was familiar with. It was a bit strange watching CGI-rendered young Lebowski I have to confess. I couldn't really get used to it but your mileage may vary. To be honest the acting was nothing special and some of the dialogue was horrible cheese. I'm not sure which Hollywood insists on resurrecting classics and injecting upstart youngsters into them.

Overall I'd say it's well worth going to see for the AV experience. I give it a solid 7.5/10.

I've also seen this and would agree with most of your post. I'm beginning to think that bridges as Clu was slightly artificial on purpose in the Grid but he looked supremely false at the beginning of the film. Worth a watch although I saw it in 2D. 3D stuff gives me a headache.

Also, Quorra. PHWOAR!

I've not been to see this but it was reviewed on the Radio5Live Film review and they were saying that it wasn't a bad film, but it did tend to be a bit boring, even amid all the action scenes. I might have to go and see it though.

Watched this at the Bham Imax and it was okay, story was rather average but the effects were stunning, would have preferred the option of 2D but the 3D was okay.

Personally, I loved it. I understand why its got a bit of a pasting in the papers but I don't think they really appreciated the visuals and the music. To me, the soundtrack was incredible. So perfect throughout.

I'd probably give it 7.5/10 as the plot is a bit weak, but overall I loved it and I'm going to see it again :)

I watched this on Saturday in 3d. Really enjoyed the action and visuals.. story is weak but not terrible so a strong 7/10 from me. The sound track is now on my spotify playlist :)

Story wasn't strong enough to warrent a 2+ hour film, I was bored by the end of it. Yes the visuals were great and all that (really didn't need the 3d though), but I'm sick of of coming out of the cinema recently saying the visuals were the only redeeming feature of the film.

5/10

Isn't it fair to say that Tron is mostly remembered for its style though? And if so, isn't it reasonable that Tron 2 attempts to follow in its footsteps in that regard?
