THE UK Government is to combat the early sexualization of children by blocking internet pornography unless parents request it, it was revealed today.

The move is intended to ensure that children are not exposed to sex as a routine by-product of the internet. It follows warnings about the hidden damage being done to children by sex sites.

The biggest broadband providers, including BT, Virgin Media and TalkTalk, are being called to a meeting next month by Ed Vaizey, the communications minister, and will be asked to change how pornography gets into homes.

Instead of using parental controls to stop access to pornography - so-called "opting out" - the tap will be turned off at source. Adults will then have to "opt in."

As far as I'm concerned, this is taking things a little too far. Are parents that irresponsible that they can't monitor their child's behaviour? Did MS make parental controls that difficult to implement? If the government are that concerned about the impacts of sex on children maybe they should insist on the blocking of all chatrooms, all IM apps and social networking sites. Oh, and all imageboards.

Of course, if such a proposal did come into effect I would be "opting in".

Why would we ignore such horrific news.

I for one think we should start a riot in the streets right now. I wont be able to join in though as its cold, there is snow.

How many squillion porn sites are there available? Not forgetting the download sources (torrent, etc) which aren't flagged as porn sources as they supply everything else too.

Or are they going to block 3/4 of the internet, just to be on the safe side?

If they are going to censor this type of site then why not other sites that affect people e.g. radicalisation sites etc which start people down a slippery slope as well...

Its a very slippery slope, Im sure if they ban porn it will be easy for them to ban anything for 18 and over. Where would it stop? ban sites because they sell manga thats 18?

The plan is to allow parents to 'opt out' of the sites and they will then be blocked at the source, rather than using conventional parental controls.

Adults who wish to view the material would have to choose to 'opt in'
Brain implodes.

As pointed out, is internet porn really that big an issue compared to everything else that they are exposed to?

What about the tv adverts, magazines, clothing ranges and god knows what else that do similar?

Good luck with that.

Agreed, that's part of the problem as well.
Just look at the backlash after that X-Factor performance the other week which was before the watershed.

The trouble with banning porn is that there is so much of it that I can't see how you would manage to get it all, certainly not without banning other stuff.
