About to buy a SSD - Help...

I have a P5Q-E mobo (I think, P5Q something) that lists the two SATA controllers as:

Intel ICH10R Southbridge
Silicon Image SIL5723

Is there any preference?

Dragon,

I've just set up my SSD/Vaio. When I installed Windows, the installer said my SSD had 223GB free space (it's a 120GB drive). I installed anyways and now with Windows running fine, it still says I have 209GB free of 223GB in total.

Any help? Also, my WEI is still 5.9.

If your score is 5.9 in Windows 7 then either your SSD isn't performing as it should or another component is dragging the score down - what's the breakdown of your score?

Sounds like you either got sent a 240 GB drive by mistake or it's been detected incorrectly. What does the OCZ Toolbox detect it as?

The WEI score for my HD is 5.9 so something isn't right there.

The OCZ Toolbox isn't detecting the drive either...

Ahh, the Toolbox isn't working because I updated to RST version 10 straightaway. Is it possible they could simply have sent me a 240GB drive?

Well... HDTune recognises it as a 240GB drive, as does ATTO. The benchmarks vary quite dramatically between the two, however - HDTune gives results of 177/150 and ATTO gives 250/240.

WEI remains at 5.9... weird.

So what's a decent benchmark? Got 7.7 in WEI.

Has anyone ever received a so called 2.5" to 3.5" adapter that actually fits their case? This is the third one I have that doesn't seem to fit anything.

The 2.5" to 3.5" adapter that came with my Vertex 2E fit my case's toolless HDD caddies perfectly.

Your benchmark results look great. The only difference between yours and mine is your 4k writes are a bit lower (155 vs 172). I also get 7.7 in WEI.

Well y'all, looks like everything is running fine on my SSD now.

They did send me a 240GB drive by mistake! Everything says so, HDTune, ATTO, CheckDisk, Intel Drivers, etc, all say 240GB drive.

My WEI went up from 5.9 to 7.7 now after a couple of hours left at the logon screen and then shut-down overnight - after a reassessment, it jumped up to 7.7.

Boot time at the moment with all drivers installed and AVG running is between 25 and 27 seconds which is excellent. I expect that to go up a bit once I've got all my standard start-up programmes running (Skype, MSN, Steam, uTorrent, etc) but all is well.

My benchmarks on ATTO are a little lower than I'd like (230/240) but frankly, as someone who really is really interested in tech, but a bit of a numpty, that's good enough for me :).

The usual answer is "as much as possible". Just keep your PC logged off for a few hours a week and it should be fine.

Why logged off? So Trim / Garbage can catch up you mean?

I have 60gb free out of 11gb is that alright? Got two games on, adobe cs5, all my web stuff and thats it. Like to run light.

Yes, leaving the PC logged off for a few hours a week lets the garbage collection recover. Personally I think you could get away with a few hours a month with normal usage but better safe than sorry. Anyone that says you need to leave your PC logged off for a few hours a day is just being silly because it isn't necessary.

60 GiB free out of 111 GiB should be fine. I have 64 GiB free on mine I think, with pretty much everything I should need installed.

While booting up I just had CHKDSK run for no reason. My old SSD used to do this too until eventually it was running perhaps every second boot up. Anyone got any ideas?

EDIT: I think it may be something to do with my extensive use of S3 sleep, dodgy drivers (Asus?) and how SSDs manage themselves.
