5850 Or 6850

the 6000 series 3D features are also supported on 5000 cards - lots of reviews of the 6000 cards miss that.
The better crossfire scaling only matters if you have two of them.
The better tesselation means that in games that aren't out yet, the 6850 might perform as well as the 5850 - but we don;t know. In all other cases, the 5850 is better.

There aren't any monitors supporting DP 1.2 yet, so that is only a benefit if the OP plans to buy 2 or more new monitors to run simultaneously from the same port, some time in the future when those monitors actually appear, OR plans to run a single monitor with a resolution so high (double that of 1920x1200, say), that it will bring the graphic card to its knees.
So the DP benefit seems arguable.

What we're left with is, the 5850 is a superior card to the 6850 right now, and likely will remain so for as long as it lasts.

Summed up very well!

For all you stating your current card is redundant then you have missed the point.

If you have a 5850 or 5870 already then thats fine.

My point is buying into a 5 series card now is not a wise decision.

I don't agree. If you are buying a card now and keeping for any length of time then you might aswell buy one with up-to-date feature set..

Buy a 6850 then in time get another for example. You have to give yourselves options not stay in the past with old tech

But this MSI runs cooler. Is power-fuller. Is quieter. And overclocks a higher percentage?

I dont even have a 6870:confused:

Why does it say you do in your sig then? ;)

Also not that I know a great deal about the architectures, but isn't the 6xxx series based upon the 5xxx cards anyway? And as others have said the crazy price that OcUK have the 5850 in at makes it a worthwhile purchase.

You all know I make a valid point.

What happens down the line if you want to go Xfire? You have to get a scabby second hand one...THEY MIGHT EVEN BE HIGHER IN PRICE DUE TO AVAILABILTY.:p

Nope 6850 now with the option of getting another and enjoying all the new up and coming technologies and games.

Oh no...all this talk about this card has got me thinking about selling my X2 and going for one myself!

What do you reckon, RavenXXX2? :)

Worth it or stay as I am?

£125 I would, x2 getting on a bit now, sell her before it gives up the ghost, a highly clocked 5850 will be faster than it anyway, better min fps as well.

Easyrider I'm afraid you are the one don't get it...

5850 is like a car with a more powerful engine than 6850 but with average set of tyres, whereas 6850 is like a car with a weaker engine, but decent set of tyres.

At the corners (tessellation), the 6850 is able to compete head to head with the 5850 in terms of overall speed, but once out of the corners in the the straight (dx9 or low/no tesselation games), the 5850 pulls ahead of the 6850. It is this simple.

And I think all this talk about the 68xx being new tech is a bit bull, as it is still largely based on the Evergreen design of the 5000 series. Unless the new features (HD3D etc) ACTUALLY relevent to the individual, they don't add value at all otherwise.
