Considering a car change in March-April next year and looking to spend upto 45k

Would a Cayman 3.4S be a decent compromise?

I've seriously considered them, but the worrying thing for me is I've been used to quite a bit of grunt, 577BHP Mustang, 380BHP M3 CSL, 400BHP EVO. Therefor I am thinking as awsome as a Cayman is its lack of power would soon grow tiring. Though I do think the Cayman is probably even better handling and more forgiving then a 911?

I do like the 997 C2/C4S option though and from what I gather if one wants more grunt they is quite a bit of tuning available for them.

Because lets face it whatever I buy will be tweaked/fettled with in someway, its just my nature. :D

I'd love a 911 but I wouldnt even ask where the Nissan dealer is*

*Hypothetically speaking, a test drive in a GTR for the lulz would have to be done if I was ever buying cars in that price range.

Badge don't bother me, if I enjoy the car it could be a Skoda as far as I am concerned.

In fact ultimate badges like Ferrari, Lambo or Aston scare me a little as maybe I don't fit in with the usual crowd for owning such cars as in I am not some rich footballer or a poser. I buy it for driving pleasure and even modding/fun ability. :)

The other benefit of a Porsche is you dont need to spend all that budget, 35k will do the job, get it OPC warrantied and your good to go with 10k in hand.

No, but it shouldn't be a deal-breaker. You have the passenger seat/footwell in both anyway.

I aint going to argue you with you, hence the smiley, but if you ever want to take the odd pal or carry some stuff the two cars dont compare in terms of space.

Thats half of what makes a 911 what it is, it is a practical usable every day car.

45k is serious cash Gibbo.

I mean, you need to really, really consider what you go for here. Not that you wouldn't, but even more so. You may never find yourself lucky enough to do this sort of sized purchase again, so based on that... I'd be doing the following.

Ruling out performance audi's/bmw's. It's clear from many members on here that you can get older M3's/M5's and run them absolutely no problem when paying significantly less than your budget. Based on that, I'd 'miss out on the specialty' of having a newer/less owner/less miles/whatever version and pip for something seriously special.

Personally it would be out of 2 cars. An NSX-R (if 45k is enough) or a 911 of some sort.

An NSX-R whilst not many peoples cup of tea is, unquestionably, seriously unique. OK, its hillarious money for a Honda that looks like the 80's even in the NA2 revision, but it is a real head turning car. Before I moved to Watford in 2007 I'd only ever seen 1, after that point, I saw a further 3 cars (1 I was parked next to in a carpark which I ended up chatting to the owner to, she had owned it since new, 1 was owned by the parts manager at the Honda Garage I used, and the other I would see from time to time in central london.) Based on the way I know you drive, your the kind of person who could bring the best from an NSX and have incredible fun on the track with one. However, I do accept there are A LOT of people who would think it madness to spend this much money on a Honda.

Regarding the 911, I actually think its quite a tough one to work out which one I would have. Part of me would love a pre 89 Classic, but 45k is a lot of cash to spend on one of these. The other part of me would want the best 997 I could get (C2S/C4S for this money?).

In honesty mate, I think this is a tough one to do a thread on. This must be a special to you purchase. In my eyes I'd even consider something older like a 355 Ferrari, and use some of the change for a daily driver like a 1k Merc/Mondeo/Whatever but I dont know how open to this you are.

Best of luck with whatever you decide to go for

It aint as generous as the back seats in a 997 :)

I've been passenger in 997 C2S a lot and it drove remarkably well, seems to be quicker than the CSL in a straight line, especially at loopy speeds and its handling was fantastic. It had magnetic dampers and in sport mode it was too hard for typical UK bumpy road, so was better in normal mode but if road was good then sport mode was so focused.

Here is that particular C2S I was a passenger in many times, looks to die for:-

The other thing i forgot was if you go Porsche, even from a dealer, get a specialist inspection done, Peter Morgan i think can now do the ecu interrogation for over revs and hours run mobile. If not have it taken to Jaz or somewhere good, best 400 quid you are going to spend.

911Virgin is the best specialist i have found, Henry is a blinder, but they aint cheap.

Nissan GT-R 3.8 Black Edition 2d 3.4 s 193 mph 471 bhp

Get one with like 2000 miles, warranty.. etc

Go for it :D

Yes of course you can, anything with a Porsche badge on it is a real Porsche, I've never understood the sentiments of some people.

Even the ones with the "Van" engine? ;)

Okies im not one for chipping in on motors threads and espeacialy not on the faster stuff (although dont mistake that for my lack of knowledge :p )

Forget AM . I was a test driver for 9 months for them and did many thousands of miles and although good the build quality and general reliability was poor and when really pushing on felt to soft .

I did a few driver days for porshe for future customers and really enjoyed them but only the turbo felt quick :P Although they handled very well and was a great drift tool .

But the main reason for my post was as a biker and having played with a lot of interesting cars nothing has ever truly blown me away (other than some 900hp skyline) untill the end of this summer on the way down the A6 i happened accross a GtR .

Now i was not on the fastest bike but still .. 145bhp 155ish top end and 0-60 in the low 3's im more than a match for 99.9% of cars BUT i got totally pwned by that Gtr . From a standing start , 60mph roll on and everythin g inbetween it completley destroyed me easily pulling 100 yards on me from a standing start and holding that advantage .

Now im under no illusion that a standard Gtr would be closeish to the performance i had so i assume he was running 600+ but my god was that quick .

I havent driven one but as an upgrade to the evo i think it would make a great choise (i have driven the evo 9 ) .

At the ned of the day you can only decide when you have tried one bt thats where my ££ would go if i had the 45k

Persil
