Lack of awareness on WW1/2

In SECONDARY SCHOOL, we learned about WWI and II before GSCEs. I am not big on modern history though so most of it didn't go in

It is quite sad that a lot of people do not know the basics of the two most destructive conflicts mankind has bore witness to.

Over twenty million military dead and 70 million in total lost their lives.

That is just the count for WWII.

More than 700,000 British troops died in WWI and over 1.5 million were wounded with a total of around 36 million military and civilian deaths on all sides.

Picking up a history book so that they are not forgotten is the least someone can do.

Over 100 million people died in both conflicts.

I tell you something I don't understand about WW1, is that we blame the Germans!
If the archduke of the german-austrohungarian alliance was shot and they declared war on Serbia because of it, then Russia, France, and the Uk stepped in and it all kicked off, how was it Germany's fault? Surely Serbia should be blame for kicking it off to begin with????

The end of the Great War is easy. After the 100 days the war ceased fire on the 11th hour of 11/11/1918. Though Russia stopped in 1917 due to there communist revolution.

We did mosty Tudors and WWI and II. Stuff thats too modern for me, gimme a good Peloponnesian War any day!

tbh, I like knowing random historical facts ... but hated it as a subject
Especially when you had to write essays about things such as Thomas Wolsey etc

It's a hell of a lot more complex than that. That just kicked off the already simmering tensions. It was when Germany decided to invade France and take back the land they lost in the 1870s (I think) that things really kicked off*. Think there was also something to do with empire building in Africa in there too and various alliances such as ours with Belgium and the Triple Entente
with France and Russia).

(Very basic summary, essentially Germany used the assassination to start a war)

EDIT: Oh and you also have the well known phrase: "History is written by the Victors", it wasn't quite as clear cut as WW2.

At school we didnt cover any of the wars for gcse, the rise to power of the nazis was one area we did cover. My knowledge of ww2 is what ive read myself over the years, it's a subject ive aways been interested in, though my level of knowledge/reading on ww1 is a lot less.
