5850 Or 6850

As far as I'm aware the 6850 has slightly improved tessellation performance, but bear in mind that in GAMES, tessellation is still not that heavily used. It's only in unrealistic BENCHMARKS like unigine that you will see any real difference in performance.

I seriously doubt that it will 'really' matter that much which card you get as the either card will start to be to slow anyway over the next few years due to games demanding more and more (as is normal progress). At that point you'll probably be wanting to turn off things like tessellation (on either card) to get the game's to run smooth enough anyway... so I really think tessellation is a moot point at present for this level of card.

Even in Heaven Bench the 6850 is only 1fps faster than the 5850 :p

That's rubbish. If people care about tessellation so much, they'd be getting 6950/6970 or Fermi, not something half-assed like 6850/6870.

WTF with the "haha...my 6850 owns your 5850 with its 1fps faster in Heaven Bench! Who cares if it is around 10% slower than 5850 in games that doesn't use tessellation!" logic?

Not really. It only proves that it has better tessellation performance. Use a realistic representation of tessellation and I bet the 5850 is faster.

Bottom line is the 5850 is faster, except in a heavily overrated benchmark. For the current price of under £125 it is an absolute steal for a 5850, I wouldn't go for the 6850 at that price. See post #202 for why I think tessellation won't really matter for at least a year (and why it's a moot point anyway at this performance level).
 
Bottom line is the 6850 offers a faster upgrade path and newer features. These will only become more prevalent with driver updates etc...

The gains with the 5850 are not big enough after looking at the benchmarks

Top notch 5850 or ultra cheap version 6850 that's slower. If the 6850 was cheaper than the 5850, then I'd probably recommend the 6850, but as it stands the guy could get a cracking deal on the MSI 5850 and was wise to take advantage IMO. You're just arguing for arguings sake.

But he wasn't getting dual cards he was getting one :rolleyes: (I don't doubt the scaling will be better than 5xxx series going on the reviews I've read, but doesn't inherently mean it will be faster because scaling is better.)
 
Incidently.. the chepest 6850 was 135 with MW2. If you sold that, it would be realistically around the same price as the MSI 5850 offer.

I kind of wish I'd ordered a 6950 instead of a 6970 actually. I can imagine me getting round to ordering another and xfire'ing them a lot sooner with cards that are £50 cheaper :/

edit: I read that as 6950, not 6850. Gah..damn my eyes.
 
5850 CF is power hungry and needs 4 x PCI-E connectors.

Its not a good idea considering the 6850 is faster and more efficient.

The difference in power consumption between 5850CF and 6850CF is staggering considering the 6850 is faster.

Why are we now discussing crossfire? Why are you derailing trying to make the thread match your argument?

6850 is NOT faster than a 5850.

I think I can some you up with some people I often come across when they have a vague insight into PC's, and try and tell you what I should do, and just spout crap. I just end up letting them believe they are right to get them to shut up. That's where I'm at with you. Soz bud, but everyone else is disagreeing with you.

My argument stemmed from looking at the bigger picture and leaving open an upgrade path that was

A: Cheap
B: Fast
C: Efficient
D: Good support for later games
E: The ability to run multiple monitors
F: To support the latest GFX card Technoliogies
