no, it just sets off the shop alarm when it passes though the sensors by the doors of the supermarket

Just leave the tag on? If not it's only to set an alarm off when you leave the shop. You could cut it off nothing would happen.

no point popping the top off if it's for a gift though. A Magnet will open it without any problems otherwise you'll just need to cut it.
